QAASID – 2pts win (5/1 generally)
AS a general rule in British racing, front-runners do best, then prominent racers (e.g. tracked leaders, chased leaders), who in turn fare better than horses ridden patiently. There are exceptions to every rule and one of those is races over 1m2f+ on the Tapeta surface at Newcastle where it’s desperately difficult to win from the front. The Julie Camacho-trained QAASID was always close to the front end when landing a 1m2f handicap there in February, sitting in second place before taking up the running just over a furlong out (about one furlong sooner than ideal). He did really well to hold on from Muzaffar, who went one better next time, with the pair pulling four and a half lengths clear of the third. Qaasid was beaten at odds of 8-11 and 5-2 on his next two starts bit both came at Newcastle under forcing tactics. He also sat closer to the early pace than ideal when second of 14 at Lingfield on his latest start and looks very interesting now returning to turf on a track that typically favours early pace and with an excellent front-running jockey on board in Hollie Doyle. He’s yet to win from eight starts on turf but went closest the only previous time that Doyle was on board, finishing a three-quarters of a length fourth at Chester when always caught wide.
YORK 5.15
CLEARPOINT – 1pt e/w (16/1 generally)
CLEARPOINT fared best of the centre group when fifth of 13 at Thirsk on his reappearance last month (first five drawn 9, 11, 13, 12 and 6 of 13) and Miss Brazen (stall 1), the poorly-drawn seventh, won by four lengths at Beverley next time. Washington Heights, ninth from stall 2, found only one too good at Newmarket next time and Clearpoint looks worth a punt to build on that promise now fitted with first-time cheekpieces. His middle draw looks ideal and the faster ground will suit.

RUTHLESS ARTICLE – 1pt e/w (22/1 generally)
RUTHLESS ARTICLE tends to jump out to his left on right-handed tracks and it was very surprising to see him asked to race at Ascot on his penultimate start. He’d been beaten by 53 lengths, 25 lengths and 31 lengths in his three previous runs over obstacles at right-handed venues, so it was no surprise to see the 10-1 shot (backed from 16-1) trail home 35 lengths behind the winner in fifth of the six runners. He pulled up when an outclassed 50-1 shot for the Scottish National on his next outing and that run is also easy to forgive. This is his time of year – his record from May to September reads 1242111F23U21 (5-13) for a profit of £16.77 to a £1 level stake at SP – and he’s only 2lb higher than when successful at Uttoxeter last summer.
