4.40 Newcastle – HAPPY BANNER (1pt ew – 7/1 generally)
George Boughey’s newcomer Brooklyn heads the early betting for this 7f novice stakes but stall 1 could make life difficult for the newcomer and I’d rather side with Ed Walker’s once-raced HAPPY BANNER. The son of Starspangledbanner was slowly away and ran green on his way to a 28-1 seventh at Newmarket on last month’s debut and will improve for that. His trainer is 11 from 28 with his second time out two-year-olds this year (+£46.48 to a £1 level stake at SP) and Clifford Lee is a positive booking.

6.45 Newcastle – ALFA WHITEBIRD (1.5pt win – 5/1 Paddy Power, 888sport, 9/2 generally)
Monsieur Kodi took his record in Class 4 or lower company to six wins from 16 starts (+£22.50 to a £1 level stake at SP) when scoring at Chelmsford last time, doing this column a favour in the process, but the return to Newcastle where his record reads 5th of 8, 12th of 13, 9th of 10 and 5th of 13 is a concern. Of greater interest is ALFA WHITEBIRD, whose form has taken off since undergoing wind surgery. Craig Lidster’s three-year-old returned from the wind operation/252-day break with a respectable 22-1 fourth of 14 at Redcar in later August before a close-up second at Catterick where he stumbled soon after the start, a pair 6f Tapeta wins and Newcastle/Southwell and a desperately unlucky eighth of 13 back at Redcar (trapped against the far rail and repeatedly hampered). He’s nicely drawn in stall 9 and the booking of Billy Loughnane takes the eye. NORTHERN SPIRIT, second best of the closers when fifth at Doncaster last time, will appreciate the return to this venue and could be the one for the forecast.
