1.52 Southwell – ARIKA (1pt win – 100/30 bet365)
ARIKA was a frustrating 12-race maiden when trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam but the switch to in-form Karl Burke (five winners from his last ten runners) could perk him up in this 7f handicap. The six-year-old is 11lb lower than when going down by just over two lengths in fifth over course and distance in December 2023 and new connections are quick to drop him in trip after multiple runs over 1m-1m2f for his old yard. Burke has a useful record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, scoring with 32 of the 172 qualifiers since the beginning of 2004 (18.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £85.30 to a £1 level stake at SP.

3.55 Southwell – BALQAA (1pt e/w – 9/1 Betfair Sportsbook, 8/1 bet365)
Stella Barclay is another who has her string in fine form (three winners from ten runners in the past fortnight) and BALQAA looks set to go well in this 1m handicap from what looks a good draw in stall 2. The seven-year-old has made the frame at odds of 33-1, 14-1 and 11-1 in her three runs this winter after returning from a short break and the likely strong place will help, as she tends to miss a beat at the start. Her three course runs have produced form figures of 231 (1-3), with the third place by just half a length at odds of 10-1.
