2.35 Chepstow – KING TURGEON (1pt win – 15/2 bet365)
KING TURGEON improved for a wind operation to record a comfortable 12-1 success at Fontwell in March 2023 on his second outing for David Pipe and started last season in good form, going down narrowly to Eceparti over today’s course before scoring at Exeter. His form tailed off after those two runs, but he had another wind operation over the summer and that could spark a revival. More interestingly, his trainer has a great record with his chasers in the first half of the peak jumps season (October to January) who were returning from a break of 150 days or longer, scoring with 77 of the 354 qualifiers (21.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £134.71 to a £1 level stake at SP. So far this month, the score is four wins from four runners for a profit of £23.95.

2.57 Bangor – LADY BALKO (1pt win – 9/1 bet365, William Hill)
Given the stats mentioned above regarding David Pipe’s break-returners over fences in the early months of the peak jumps season, I have to be interested in LADY BALKO in this novices’ handicap chase. The five-year-old mare was a three-time winner over hurdles last term and her full record in handicap company over 2m4f or further reads 211122 (3-6). She’s yet to race over fences but, since 2018, Pipe’s chase debutants who were running after a break of 150 days or longer in the October to January period are seven from 27 for a profit of £15.63. She won her sole point-to-point start and, while today’s 2m4.5f trip might be on the short side, she’s worth chancing at the available price.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Venetia Williams Runners Must Have Soft Ground
November is just around the corner, so stand by for a glut of winners trained by Venetia Williams and the inevitable “her runners need soft ground” comments in the racing media. I’ve already heard this recently – after her stable jockey Charlie Deutsch won a Goodwood handicap for professional jump jockeys earlier this month –…
