WELSH GRAND NATIONAL
The Welsh Grand National has been won by the likes of Synchronised, Monbeg Dude and Native River in recent years and this year’s renewal promises to be another fascinating edition of this stamina-sapping handicap chase.
The weights for this year’s renewal are topped by the aforementioned Native River, who bids to join a small number of horses that have achieved multiple Welsh Grand National victories.
Colin Tizzard’s ardent stayer will be suited by conditions and should strip fitter for a recent pipe-opener at Aintree. Whilst the concession of upwards of 10lb to his rivals no easy feat, there would arguably be no more popular winner all year than this admirable 11yo.
Whilst Native River is no forlorn hope at around the 16/1 mark, it is last year’s winner, Secret Reprieve, who currently heads the betting for this year’s Welsh Grand National.
Evan Williams’ charge won as he liked twelve months ago, pulling clear of the likes of The Two Amigos and Yala Enki despite his girth breaking in the closing stages of the race and his rider therefore not in full control.
Secret Reprieve hasn’t been seen since that success but he is unlikely to be undercooked in his bid for a repeat win and a 6lb higher mark may well underestimate him.
Irish raider The Big Dog looks a particularly interesting runner for this year’s race. The 8yo Mahler gelding has been a horse that has always shown a strong proficiency for testing conditions as shown when landing the Grand National Trial at Punchestown back in February.
Although not at his best in two starts this season The Big Dog gets in here off a nice racing weight of 10st 7lb and his shrewd yard rarely tilt at windmills, with their runners in Britain in recent years producing a level stakes profit of +32.95.
Once deemed good enough to contest a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival (for which he was sent off as short as 13/2), it would be no shock if The Big Dog had been trained to the minute for this race and therefore he must enter calculations.
