Catalans to win (Leeds Rhinos vs Catalans Dragons) Rugby League, Saturday 1pm – 10/11

Channel 4’s lunchtime kick off on Saturday sees the Catalans Dragons head to Headingley for the latest round of Super League.

For anyone unfortunate enough to have watched the Rhinos’ latest game with Castleford, their weaknesses and general lack of direction was for all to see. They papered the cracks against a fatigued St Helens a fortnight ago, but make no mistake this is a poor outfit. They are also sensationally set to lose Kris Leeming, who has been allowed to find another club, and there’s a sense all is not well at Leeds right now.

The Catalans Dragons on the other hand are 5/5 and look genuine contenders this season. They’ve shown their creative abilities scoring 38 points against both Hull KR and Wakefield, but also real grit when defeating Wigan away from home 18-10 in the wind and rain. Unbelievably, they aren’t heavy favourites for this trip and you can even back them at +1.5 points. I’m happy to go win only here which looks a real gift and far too respecting of a lacklustre Leeds that we have encountered so far.

Rock Hurley (Broxton Gates Handicap Hurdle) Saturday 3.43pm – (Currently 11/10 with William Hill)

French recruit Rock Hurley could be a smart find if his last two wins are anything to go by. He’s won by a combined 21 lengths in his last couple of races and looks to be getting the hang of things.

He could be very much underestimated here and wouldn’t have to be any sort of world beater to win this. There’s some moderate form on offer by much more exposed horses and Donald McCain’s charge might make light work of this.

Over 44.5 Points (Dragons vs Sharks) NRL, Sunday 8.15am – Evens

The Dragons and the Sharks renew rivalries in Sydney on Sunday and if there’s one thing we should see it’s points.

Both these sides have started the season with a couple of losses to their name, conceding plenty along the way. They also both have enough strike power in the armoury to trouble opponents and this should lead to a free scoring game.

In all but one of these sides’ opening 7 games, you’d have made money backing over 44.5 and it should be 7/8 today.

In the corresponding fixture last season the Sharks ran out 36-12 winners, but this should be a little tighter in terms of scoreline. Expect this to be an end-to-end encounter and with the rain looking like it will stay away the Over points should land comfortably.

England to win to nil (England vs Ukraine) Euro 2024 Qualifier, Sunday 5pm – 5/6

I was struggling to see why England were over evens to win to nil against Ukraine on Sunday when first looking at the game. Since the victory against Italy they’re now odds-on at 5/6 to win, but I still think that’s an excellent bet.

Gareth Southgate isn’t known for playing exciting, attacking football, and is more set on a solid backline whilst knowing he has the players on the pitch to create goalscoring chances still. Ukraine are hardly prolific in front of goal and this should be a comfortable victory for England.

England have a superb qualification record and only conceded three goals in their World Cup qualifying group. Ukraine on the other hand only managed to score 11 goals from their eight games in their WC qualifying group, so the chances of an England win to nil are looking good.

Add to that the fact England cruised to victory in the last H2H, winning 4-0 and only allowing Ukraine two shots on goal. This looks a solid bet and I’m confident England will win here – for a scoreline prediction I would go with a safe 2-0 victory. But the fact England are 11/10 to win to nil is enough for me and I’ll happily add it to the acca this weekend!
