Through-The-Card Tips for Newcastle’s AW Card On Tuesday Evening

The 2023/24 All-Weather Championship gets underway on Tuesday at Newcastle, with nine competitive races on the card, all sponsored by BetUK + BetMGM.

GG editor Tom Aldridge runs through the full card, giving his selections for all nine races, including one he’s keen on at a big price in the penultimate race on the card.

4.20pm – BetUK. Home Of The ACCA-FENWA Handicap (Class 4)

4YO’s have won four of the last six renewals and I think James Ferguson’s SAVROLA can get the better of market leader Oh So Grand. The latter has to be respected on the back of his easy win when last on the AW, plus he was unfortunate not to win last time out at Epsom, but I think he could be worth taking on here. Savrola has a fine AW record this season, winning one and going close in each of the two most recent runs, including last time out over a slightly longer than ideal trip at Kempton. He drops back to 1m 2f here and is nicely drawn in stall 2 (two of the last five winners came from stall 2), and his hopes are boosted by having last years AW Championship leading jockey Daniel Muscutt remaining on board.

4.55pm – BetUK. It’s Where The UK Bets Handicap (Class 2)

This is a tough race to predict, with Military March returning from a 999 day absence but currently heading the betting. If he’s fully fit he should take all the beating, but you can forgive him for needing this run so I’ll be taking him on. The one I’ve come down on the side of is HAUNTED DREAM, who has a exemplary AW record of four wins from six races, placing in the other two. He’s only had the one win to his name this season, but has placed in four of his last five, including an excellent third at York in August. The return to the all-weather will help and the fact Daniel Muscutt is back on board is another factor that should boost his chances.

5.30pm – Stay Golden With BetMGM Safer Gambling Restricted Novice Stakes (Class 5)

After an eye-catching debut at Lingfield last month, this looks a good opportunity for FLICKERING FLAME to gain a maiden win. James Tate’s filly wasn’t beaten far by the winner Monkmoor Pip despite giving him a couple of lengths head start out of the stalls. The winner was only two lengths behind Ciara Pearl next time out, which was a solid effort considering he was giving her 10lb. Flickering Flame receives 5lb from Ciara Pearl in this, and I fully expert her to come out on top, with top jockey Hollie Doyle booked for the ride.

6.00pm – Boost Your Acca At BetMGM Nursery Handicap (Class 6)

SUPREME TENACITY heads the betting and deservedly so, considering he wasn’t beaten far last time out on his first attempt on the all-weather last time out. That looks to be comfortably the best piece of form on offer, in a race that is lacking much standout form, so it should pay to side with the in-form runner. The danger will likely be Socialise, whose form of his C&D run last month has worked out well, but he’ll struggle to give 3lb to Supreme Tenacity here, who can give trainer Phillip Makin a first win at Newcastle this season.

6.30pm – Best Racing Odds Guaranteed At BetMGM Handicap (Class 6)

This looks a good race featuring a trio of C&D winners, and I’m siding with ROYAL PROSPECT to reverse last time out form with Pop Favorite. The selection never really looked like catching the winner last month on his debut for his new yard, but an 8lb swing in the weights is a huge amount considering he was actually only a length behind the winner, so I’m confident he’ll be able to reverse that form. Graham Lee has been on board for three of Royal Prospect’s eight victories and is booked for the ride here, which is eyecatching considering the last time he was on board was almost three years ago when the horse was rated 75. Now off a mark of 51, I think the 8YO looks a good option to land his first win in over a year.

7.00pm – Bet £10 Get £40 At BetMGM Handicap (Class 5)

PORT ERIN has been progressing nicely since moving into handicaps, and this looks a realistic opportunity for him to follow up last weeks Kempton victory. Simon & Ed Crisford’s gelding never looked like losing once hitting the front, and he won with enough authority to suggest he should be able to handle the 7lb rise in the weights. He ran out a comfortable winner on his sole previous effort over C&D, and I’m keen to keep on side with him whilst he’s firmly on the upgrade.

7.30pm – Boost Your ACCA-FENWA With BetUK Handicap (Class 6)

Paul Mulrennan has a solid strike rate at Newcastle (16% from 121 rides this season) and usually rides a winner or two on their cards – he has seven rides on the card on Tuesday and I think COSA SARA could be his best chance. He was on board when finishing a four length 6th the last time she ran at Newcastle back in August, in a race that has worked out extremely well since. The winner, 3rd, 4th, 7th and 9th have since come out and won, whilst she too has also won since. A couple of poorer efforts over 1 mile or further have seen her drop back to a mark of 53, which looks within her reach now. She looks a solid E/W option in what looks a fairly open race.

8.00pm – Find More Big Deals At BetUK Handicap (Div 1 – Class 6)

I think this race is wide open so I’m going to side with one a bit of a price who has a solid record when racing at Newcastle – Philip Kirby’s FIRCOMBE HALL. His record over C&D reads 2127213169, with the last two poor efforts when on the back of a break (57 days and 432 days). The jockey booking of Hollie Doyle is a positive too, with the horse finishing in the top two on all three of her rides on board so far. Fircombe Hall is a big price but he’s the only C&D winner in the race and I think he’s more than capable of winning this.

8.30pm – Find More Big Deals At BetUK Handicap (Div 2 – Class 6)

The last race on the card isn’t the greatest race you’ll see, with plenty in here seemingly finding it difficult to muster up any form of late, so it makes sense to side with the one runner who is in form, BLACKCURRENT. The 7YO has finished in the top three in all four of his races since returning from a break, including a win on his sole effort over C&D during that time. He was unsuited by the drop in trip last time out, so the step back up to 6f looks a wise move by connections and it’s difficult to see anything beating him. Six of his nine career victories have come at Newcastle, and he has an excellent opportunity of landing a seventh here.
