(1) (3.00pm Huntingdon) HOLLY HARTINGO was 9/4, now EVENS
A winner on her rules debut for Alastair Ralph, that came as a slight surprise at 20/1 at Ludlow last month. She is one of only two hurdles winners in this field and given that she performed with credit in the point-to-point atmosphere prior to running under rules, there is plenty of scope for her to take decent rank in mares’ novice events this season.
(2) (2.40pm Lingfield) KEEP RIGHT ON was 9/2, now 5/2
Belatedly got off the mark for Richard Hannon at the 16th attempt over course and distance at the start of December. However, his last two runs have probably been his best and both have been at this track and trip, so he may well have found a home for himself. He is only up 2lb for that success last time out and Hannon’s record on the all-weather with horses of four-years-old and upwards is outstanding (+103.1pts in the last five years).
(3) (12.20pm Sedgefield) SPIKE JONES was 6/1, now 3/1
Won a bumper at the second time of asking for Samuel Drinkwater back in October. That inspired connections to send the then four-year-old over hurdles in the following months, though two runs at Ffos Las proved fruitless. 5lb claimer Danny Burton is called upon to help things and the step up in trip is interesting given he was the best stayer over two miles on heavy in his bumper success.
(4) (5.00pm Wolverhampton) VOCATUS was 7/1, now 9/2
Mick Appleby’s six-year-old has not necessarily shown his true self on the all-weather, but punters may have latched onto the form of his last effort over course and distance. His jockey that day, Rhys Clutterbuck, said that his mount bashed his head while in the stalls, losing ground and yet running on to be fourth of nine. He is off the same mark here and has a good draw to get a more prominent position out of stall 2.
(5) (5.45pm Dundalk) PRAYING MANTIS was 10/1, now 5/1
Beaten only 1 ½ length when upped in trip at Dundalk a week ago and also ran well on his previous start over course and distance in November off 1lb higher (had a 3lb claimer on). He stays on an unchanged mark from his last start, but did not appear to see out 1m 2f last time, so this return to a mile should certainly be a positive.
