(1) (3:35pm Newbury) THE RUSSIAN DOYEN was 10/1, now 9/2
Winner of a small field, limited handicap chase over C&D back in January of 2019 and has struggled somewhat in four runs since, although a third on his seasonal return at Fontwell (2m 3f, good to soft) did offer some momentum. However that was shortlived, when pulled up in the most recent start in the PaddyPower Gold Cup at Cheltenham (2m 4f, soft). Return to 2m will help, while addition of blinkers could aide too.
(2) (1:30pm Newcastle) BARON DE MIDLETON was 11/1, now 5/1
Won a small field, novice hurdle back in March at Sedgefield (2m 3f, heavy), but has found it tougher, now racing at the higher levels and chasing, finishing fifth in two starts this season, in Class 3 contests at Carlisle (1m 7f - 2m 4f, good and heavy). He is a 3m point winner, so today’s 2m 7f trip should fit the bill in this handicap chase debut. Every chance, but needs to start to perform.
(3) (6:00pm Wolverhampton) THAKI was 14/1, now 11/2
Unspectacular couple of runs so far for this Luke McJannet runner, finishing fifth at Chelmsford (1m, a/w) and then sixth at Kempton (7f, a/w) seventeen days ago. A long way off the winners and even with a drop down in class, he still has a bit to prove. Has been backed in well overnight and this morning, however and may be worth a small wager, each-way.
(4) (1:43pm Doncaster) MICK MAESTRO was 14/1, now 15/2
Two wins and three places in ten career starts so far. Finished third on final run of last season at Wincanton (1m 7f, good) and returned from a nine month break, when third at Carlisle last month, finishing 6.5 lengths adrift of the winner in a Class 3 contest. Looks capable of more, based on that performance and with that bit of sharpness has clearly encouraged backing in the market.
(5) (3:07pm Bangor) MILANVERA was 14/1, now 15/2
Eight race maiden so far and generally unexposed in five hurdle runs so far, including a promising fifth on seasonal debut at Sedgefield (2m 5f, good to soft), finishing 11 lengths adrift, some 23 days ago. Extension to 2m 7f offers a potential for further improvement this afternoon, with market backing seemingly agreeing.
