(1) (12:00pm Haydock) MEPHISTO was 9/1, now 2/1
Promising debut, when fourth and 8 lengths behind Kameko, a year ago, but has struggled since, with a couple of tenth placed finishes, including last time out at Wolverhampton over a mile on first run since being gelded. Makes handicap debut this afternoon and it’s felt that the extended 1m 2f trip should bring out a better performance. Backed in overnight to favourite status.
(2) (2:50pm Chepstow) NEWTON JACK was 9/1, now 9/4
Average performances in three novice outings, but handicap debut finished 3 lengths off today’s favourite Queen Of Silca at Chelmsford last month in his first run since being gelded. Should improve further, but each-way backing looks the best option, despite the strong market movement.
(3) (6:00pm Wolverhampton) HAWAFEZ was 8/1 now 10/3
Has made significant improvement since joining Archie Watson’s yard, finishing fourth at Yarmouth in a maiden, before a struggle in a Fillies Novices at Lingfield eight days later, which may have been a little too soon. Handicap debut today and off a decent mark, has a strong opportunity to grab the win.
(4) (4:15pm Hamilton) MOGSY was 14/1 now 5/2
Picked up one and only victory at Catterick last September, winning a three runner race by nine lengths. Well beaten on debut / seasonal return for Jedd O’’Keeffe and arguably needed that run, so should be sharper this afternoon. First attempt at 6f, which could be a master stroke.
(5) (3:30pm Haydock) LEO DAVINCI was 25/1, now 9/2
Plenty of good form this time last year, including a victory at Redcar when 3lbs lower, but last couple of runs have been disappointing, including an eleventh at Kempton back in October. Returned to action at the same venue last month over a mile, but finished 14 lengths adrift. Needs to improve over those runs, but he has been heavily backed in from 25’s, which warrants interest.
