1: PROTEKTORAT (2:15pm Cheltenham) (4 votes)
Four wins in thirteen career races, with three in the last five runs. After a couple of seconds at Wincanton and Kelso, Dan Skelton’s charge ended the season with victory at Aintree in the Grade 1 – Manifesto Novices Chase (2m 3f, good to soft), beating The Shunter by 3.75 lengths. He was tongue-tied for the first time that day, which is retained and on that form looks to have a big chance here, with a three-way battle expected against Al Dancer and Lalor.

2: CAPE GENTLEMAN (12:38pm Punchestown) (2 votes)
Emmet Mullins runner has won five of ten career starts so far and comes in to this contest, looking for a hat-trick, having won on seasonal return and chasing debut over C&D (good) last month, ahead of race rival Buddy Rich, before adding a Grade 3 victory at Cork (2m 4f, heavy) thirteen days ago, when an impressive 14 lengths clear. Versatile on most ground and looks the one to beat here

3: OPPOSITES ATTRACT (1:05pm Cheltenham) (2 votes)
Two time winner, who placed four times last season, including in a beginner chase at Wexford (3m 1f, heavy) back in March. He ended the season with a poor run in the Irish Grand National, although yielding ground was far from ideal that day. He comes into this contest well handicapped on previous form and goes in as joint favourite, but conditions are a concern here, with some caution warranted.

4: DRAGON BONES (2:50pm Cheltenham) (2 votes)
Classy performer for Ian Williams, with five victories in eight starts so far. The talented mare sealed a treble back in May, when taking the spoils at Newton Abbot (2m 5f, good) in a same-sex novice hurdle. She returned last month, when bidding for a four-timer, but finished just a length behind Bardenstown Lad, here over C&D. Makes handicap bow here and has Charlie Todd’s 3lbs claim also to help. Big opportunity here..

5: MACKELDUFF (3:25pm Cheltenham) (2 votes)
Olly Murphy runner who comes in looking for a hat-trick, having added to a win at Southwell (2m 4f, good) back in May, with victory at Aintree (2m 4f) twenty days ago, in the Wallasey Handicap Hurdle, when impressively quickening in the final furlong to pull away from Pounding Poet and win by 3.25 lengths. Plenty of scope for further improvement and expected to have a big say in this contest
