1. MAHLER’S PROMISE (2.00pm Huntingdon) 2 votes

Started his chase career back in June with a runner-up finish at Worcester, but has improved over intermediate trips since, scoring in stylish fashion at Newton Abbot. He has been second twice more most recently, behind progressive and exuberant winners respectively and the fact he remains on an unchanged mark of 127 for this smaller field event ensures his chances are very strong here.

2. BENZEMA (8.00pm Wolverhampton) 2 votes

Two races over this trip on this tapeta surface at Newcastle produced varying experiences for David O’Meara’s charge. He was a juvenile then and still seemingly immature, as he travelled strongly in the first of those races without reaching the leader with his challenge, before ducking at the start and putting paid to his own challenge in the second. He remains on a consistent mark and this is probably his ideal trip and surface, so he can go close again.

3. SON OF THE SOMME (1.20pm Sedgefield) 2 votes

Showed vast improvement on his second start for Brian Ellison at Doncaster on return in November. That was also his handicap debut, but no matter how hard Henry Brooke tried, he couldn’t get beyond the winner. A 6lb rise might not be too harsh given the leading pair had 12 lengths back to the third and he could well progress further anyway.

4. OUR POWER (2.00pm Huntingdon) 2 votes

Departed at the first fence at Doncaster on Tuesday and returns very quickly in what should be an easier race. He had previously beaten Jacamar at Wincanton before Christmas, with that horse following up to win at Kempton on Boxing Day. Sam Thomas’ seven-year-old was only raised 5lb for that success and below the last mark he ran off over hurdles, so there are possibilities for him once again here.

5. HOLLY HARTINGO (3.00pm Huntingdon) 2 votes

Caused a small upset in a mares’ novice hurdle at Ludlow last month, winning at 20/1. However, her point-to-point efforts hinted that improvement may come from racing with form of 62 in that sphere. Although she’ll carry a penalty for her second rules start, she could be open to any amount of improvement in a similar level of field.
