The Tote’s excellent Placepot bet offers a chance for punters to win big on multiples, with relatively small stakes. Check out our placepot picks for the card at Catterick on Thursday afternoon
Note Races 1 and 2 are paying two places only.
Race 1 (12:15pm) STAY SMART
Winner on debut at Wolverhampton twenty-three days ago, but was well out of contention in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot a week later, finishing some nine lengths adrift of the leaders, which was arguably expected. Returns to a more realistic level this afternoon and should go close.
Race 2 (12:45pm) SECRET IDENTITY
Some reasonable performances over 5f on the All-weather earlier in the year, including a fifth last time out at Wolverhampton. Switches from eye shields to blinkers today for turf return and with weak competition, should go close. Michael Mullineaux yard is in decent form too, so one to watch here.
Race 3 (1:20pm) LUCKY BEGGAR
Veteran runner, who may not quite be as good as he once was, but is capable of picking up the odd result, including a second at Leicester back in August. Had a run at Redcar three weeks ago, which will have brought some extra sharpness, while a return to 5f this afternoon will offer encouragement. Has won twice off a higher mark, but just needs to produce a bit more this afternoon, after a few disappointing outings.
Race 4 (1:50pm) INDUCTIVE
Produced decent form over the Winter on Tapeta (7f), including a 20/1 win at Wolverhampton back in February. Returned to action at the same venue, when third, three weeks ago and looks to be in with a solid chance this afternoon, assuming he can transfer that form to turf in this open contest.
Race 5 (2:20pm) THE BIG HOUSE
Won over C&D back in September, when 1lb lighter that day, but hasn’t quite been up to scratch lately, finishing 5 lengths off the victor in last two starts (3rd / 6th) over a mile. Comes into this race, with Thore Hammer Hansen claiming 5lbs and that will be a big plus here. Beating favourite, House Deposit will be a tough ask, but should be there or thereabouts come the judge.
Race 6 (2:50pm) AFFAIR
Without a victory since November 2018, when winning at Chelmsford over 1m 6f and finally returned to winning ways at the same track, this time over 1m 5f last month. Won off a pretty low mark that day and rises just 4lbs here, which looks pretty generous. Back on turf, but that shouldn’t pose any obvious issues.
