11 runners have been declared for the 2025 edition of the 2000 Guineas, the opening Classic of the season for three-year-olds. The 1m contest takes place at Newmarket this Saturday, 3rd May.
Ante-post favourite Field Of Gold is the headline name among the 11 set to go to post. The grey was a highly impressive winner of the Group 3 Craven Stakes over course and distance, but despite no horse having done the Craven-Guineas double since 2004, he is strongly touted to become the Gosden yard’s first ever winner of the 2000 Guineas. John notably trained Kingman to finish second to Night Of Thunder in 2014.
Godolphin and Charlie Appleby won this last year with Notable Speech and have two runners, with Saeed bin Suroor adding a third for the owners. Appleby’s pair are the exciting Ruling Court, a six-length winner of a Listed race at Meydan earlier this year, and Dewhurst champion Shadow Of Light, who would be making his first start of 2025. Tornado Alert would be doing likewise as an outsider for bin Suroor.
Aidan O’Brien is now six years without a 2000 Guineas winner after City Of Troy disappointed as favourite a year ago. He only has one representative this time around in Expanded, second in the Dewhurst to Shadow Of Light on just his second career start. Son Joseph also has a runner in Group 1 National Stakes scorer Scorthy Champ, while Jessica Harrington’s Green Impact is the other Irish raider in the field.
Craven runner-up Wimbledon Hawkeye is also in the line-up, himself a Group 2 winner as a juvenile, as is Listed winner Benevento, who was fourth in that trial two weeks ago. The remaining duo are the Hugo Palmer-trained Seagulls Eleven, placed behind Scorthy Champ in the Curragh’s National Stakes, and Yah Mo Be There, a Newbury Listed winner for Richard Spencer.
