A field of six has been declared on Thursday for the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, run this Saturday, 5th July. The race was won by the Derby winner in City Of Troy in 2024, though the three-year-old runners this year emerge having followed completely different paths.
Indeed, it is the older runners who largely make the headlines. Chief among them is Ombudsman, a brilliant winner of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on his first Group 1 start last time out. Owned by Godolphin, and trained by the Gosdens, he will look to burgeon his reputation ever further, as he remains relatively lightly-raced for his age.
There is a continental challenge set to be launched by Sosie. Trained in France, he is currently favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe after a ready success in the top level Prix d’Ispahan on home shores. This would be his first run in Great Britain and he is the only other older horse in the race alongside Ombudsman.
The Classic generation’s threat is headed by French Derby hero Camille Pissarro. Aidan O’Brien’s charge won the Prix Du Jockey Club, form boosted by his stablemate Trinity College at Royal Ascot, and may prove to be the yard’s number one in this race too.
However, fellow Ballydoyle inmate Delacroix could also claim that mantle. He went off favourite fro the Derby at Epsom, but was unsuited by the slow pace at the back of the field that day. He could easily bounce back at this trip.
2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court is also back looking to redeem a defeat. A late non runner in the Derby, he was put in his place in the St James’s Palace Stakes over 1m by Newmarket runner-up Field of Gold, not confirmed here, but looks like a horse who will relish this extra distance. Hotazhell, third in the Irish Guineas to Field Of Gold, completes the line-up for Jessica Harrington.
