23 runners have been declared for the Scottish Grand National and Willie Mullins is on the offensive, being responsible for more than a quarter of those in the race. The race is run at Ayr this Saturday, 12th April.
The new clear favourite for the race is the unexposed novice chaser Chosen Witness, who would represent Mullins. Down the field on his chase debut, he was third to talented stablemate Champ Kiely at Fairyhouse on his second start before unseating when still in contention in a Grade 2 at Navan. He won on this card a year ago, in the novices’ handicap hurdle, and could make light of his mark of 137.
Mullins’ battalions are vast, with far more depth beyond the market leader. Last year’s winner Macdermott remains in the line-up off 5lb higher than a year ago, while the fourth and sixth, Klarc Kent and Spanish Harlem also remain. Further novices Olympic Man and Captain Cody make up his sextet taking aim at the race.
Last year’s runner-up Surrey Quest is still in contention for Toby Lawes, with Hasthing and Rock My Way other young chasers who could be prominent for English yards. The last of the 20 in the field as things stand is Snipe for Dan Skelton, who is looking to hold off Mullins in the Trainers’ Championship, and who could keep Klarc Kent out of the race if all are declared.
The current top-weight is the recalcitrant Mr Incredible, a former Mullins inmate. He pulled himself up at Kelso last time out and was barred from running in the Grand National at Aintree, hence connections seek compensation in this contest. He is also the only representative for Scotland.
