1.45pm – EFT Systems Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

SOUTHFIELD HARVEST caught the eye in a Pertemps Qualifier at Wincanton on Boxing Day, finishing a close-up second despite racing on the slowest part of the track. He followed that with a solid third at Newbury and wears cheekpieces for the first time, a positive angle for the Paul Nicholls yard (Clan Des Obeaux scored in first-time cheekpieces here on Thursday).

POLISH had little chance in the Lanzarote after racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside and bounced back to record a 14-1 success when returned to 3m at Newbury. Both his hurdle wins have come in big fields (16 and 14 ran) and he remains open to improvement.

COME ON TEDDY needs his first run each season, recording figures of 064 (0-3) for his current yard. His record on his second or subsequent start for Tom George stands at 33241133 (2-8) and he should run his usual solid race.

BARNAVIDDAUN had form figures over hurdles in Ireland of 5221421 (2-7) and makes his debut for David Bridgwater. His new handler has a good record at the first time of asking with stable switchers over jumps, scoring with 16 of the 58 qualifiers since 2013 (27.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £51.88. William Hill cut him to 16-1 from 22-1 shortly after they opened their market.

WHIRLING DERVISH, seventh in the Cesarewitch last October, has won twice in the spring and wasn’t far behind 155-rated hurdler Not So Sleepy at Newmarket. He hasn’t had many opportunities over 3m+ and a mark of 137 could be on the generous side.

Selection: Whirling Dervish

Dangers: Barnaviddaun, Polish, Come On Teddy, Southfield Harvest

2.25pm – Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)

MY DROGO, second at 50-1 in a Cheltenham bumper last October, has since gone three from three over hurdles and was very impressive under a penalty in Grade 2 company at Kelso last time. The step up from 2m2f should suit and this exciting prospect is likely to prove hard to beat.

DREAL DEAL is prominent in the betting but he may have been flattered by his last-time-out Grade 2 win at Punchestown, as he challenged wide on a day the inside of the track was badly cut up.

LLANDINABLE LAD started as the 2-1 favourite to beat My Drogo in a Grade 2 at Ascot in December but had to settle for second place. He stopped quickly when 13-8 favourite at Haydock next time but has been freshened up since and could improve for the step up to 2m4f. He’s an interesting forecast option to again finish second to My Drogo.

Selection: My Drogo

3.00pm – Doom Bar Maghull Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)

SHISKIN was making it four from four over fences when bolting up in the Arkle and has never lost under Rules when completing the course (eight from eight). It looks a case of win or fall here.

Something has to finish second to the long odds-on jolly and that could be Nick Alexander’s ELVIS MAIL. When I first looked at this race, I was concerned by the drying ground, but they’ve put so much water on that conditions are unlikely to pose a problem. He was given too much to do when fourth at Haydock in December but has recorded figures of 122 (1-3) in his other chase outings and didn’t have the race run to suit at Carlisle last time.

Selection: Shiskin

Each-way alternative/forecast selection: Elvis Mail

3.35pm Aintree – Ryanair Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1)

THYME HILL goes extremely well when fresh and the break since his narrow second to Paisley Park in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot can be viewed positively. However, he was due to run at Cheltenham rather than here but suffered a minor injury. He’ll go close if over that problem but is short enough in the betting.

PAISLEY PARK fared best of the British-trained runners when third at last month’s Cheltenham festival, beating the next best Brit – sixth-placed Vindication – by almost 12 lengths. He won his sole start at this track and should run another solid race.

DIOL KER was hampered at the final flight when a narrow second in Grade 2 company at Gowran Park last time and remains open to plenty of improvement. He slammed Monkfish by seven lengths in a maiden hurdle back in November 2019 and could be over-priced at around 20-1.

INDEFATIGABLE looked worth another try at this sort of trip when keeping on into a 33-1 fourth of ten behind Black Tears in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. That was her first start since wind surgery and she was less than two lengths behind best-of-British Roksana, yet she’s five times the price of that rival (25-1 as opposed to 5-1). Her record in the spring reads 15114 (3-5), with the other defeat a 33-1 fifth of 22 over an inadequate 2m1f trip in the 2019 Dawn Run.

DÉCOR IRLANDAIS gets a jockey upgrade, with Jody McGarvey taking over from his usual amateur pilot. He could go well at huge odds.

Selection: Indefatigable

Dangers: Thyme Hill, Paisley Park, Diol Ker, Décor Irlandais

4.15pm – Betway Handicap Chase (Grade 3)

This has something of an impossible look to it but it often favours those who race up with the pace and Anthony Honeyball’s SAM BROWN could go well in the first-time tongue-tie. His trainer has a seven from 21 record with this headgear since the start of last year (+£6.75), improving to five from 11 with those who led or raced prominently last time. Sam Brown will be suited by the step back up in trip after his comeback third over 2m4f at Carlisle.

Selection: Sam Brown

CHARLIE’S GLANCE impressed when scoring at Newbury on his debut but this usually goes to a runner with more experience.

SUPER SIX fared second best of the British-trained runners when an 80-1 fifth in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham where he was left with plenty to do.

Sole Irish representative THE GOSSIPER scored very comfortably at Wexford last month and has been well found in the market.

Selection: Super Six

Danger: The Gossiper
