Karl Hedley has been in fantastic form in the last few weeks and he returns with his best bets for the weekend racing
MIDNIGHT SHADOW (2.25 Sandown, Saturday)
Midnight Shadow has been slowly progressing this year and showed his wellbeing with a gutsy performance at Cheltenham on New Years Day. His trainer Sue Smith has struck form with a vengeance in recent weeks and has sent out seven winners since the turn of the month.
Two and a half miles and soft ground are ideal for this seven-year-old gelding and, as he is far more likely to turn up here than Irish rivals Laurina or Fakir D’oudairies, the current price may well be worth taking. There are no doubts over his ability to handle the ground or the trip and he looks sure to be involved in the outcome.
Danny Cook has formed a formidable partnership with the consistent son of Midnight Legend, riding him to five of his six career wins to date and the combination have to be feared.
GO WHATEVER (3.00 Sandown, Saturday)
Go Whatever stepped into handicap company for the first time when last seen in December. That run came over this course and distance and he had almost three lengths to spare over the useful Dream Berry. He is clearly learning all the time and he has shown on his two most recent runs that he has an affinity for bottomless ground.
Chris Gordon’s horses appear to be holding their own at present and his relatively small yard has sent out five winners within the last four weeks, while Tom Cannon is likely to partner this unexposed six-year-old, who is likely to make a bold attempt to plunder his biggest prize to date.
He is likely to receive a good deal of weight from his rivals including Agrapart, Golan Fortune and Ask Dillon. Horses his age have an excellent recent record in this race so this young and improving sort may be the type to progress again. He is the only one in the line-up proven under the conditions over course and distance, so he has to be considered off a competitive weight.
