The Parent (13:27 Newmarket, Discover Newmarket British EBF Maiden Stakes)

THE PARENT certainly went down as one to follow after putting in good late work on his debut over seven furlongs at Sandown at the start of the month. Sent off 12/1, the son of Frankel was slowly into stride on that occasion and despite showing notable signs of inexperience throughout, Richard Hannon’s well-bred newcomer stayed on smartly once the penny had dropped and wasn’t beaten far at the line in fourth behind more experienced rivals. Purchased for 280,000gns as a yearling, connections will expect The Parent to make up into a useful prospect in time and the two-year-old will be expected to take a step forward this weekend following his pleasing debut at Sandown last time out.

Roll It In Glitter (15:22 Newcastle, County Hotel EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes)

Mick & David Easterby will have been pleased with the debut performance of ROLL IT IN GLITTER when finishing sixth in novice company at Ayr earlier this month.

Friendless in the betting beforehand, the Gustav Klimt colt showed plenty of pace leaving the stalls and arguably travelled best of all entering the final three furlongs. Asked for his effort under Shane Gray, Roll It In Glitter failed to quicken up at a crucial stage after showing clear signs of inexperience but despite ultimately crossing the line in sixth, Mick & David Easterby’s colt was only beaten four lengths and was certainly not knocked about inside the closing stages.

With the winner that day looking potentially well above average and the fourth place finisher scoring cosily back at Ayr earlier this week, it would be no surprise to see Roll It In Glitter put his debut experience to good use on Saturday afternoon and Mick & David Easterby’s colt ought to go close now lining up in a modest looking maiden.

Tommaso (16:25 York, Sky Bet UK’s No.1 Betting App Handicap)

Despite racing from 3lb out of the handicap this weekend, it could pay to take a chance on Phil Kirby’s TOMMASO, who produced his best effort on the level when running a terrific race in the John Smith’s Stayers’ Handicap over course and distance earlier this month.

The Bobby’s Kitten gelding has only scored once in his eleven starts for the North Yorkshire handler, and that victory came over hurdles back at Doncaster in January. However, despite his hurdling exploits, Tommaso has seemingly hit form in his recent outings back on the flat. Seventh over an inadequate 1m4f at York in May, Tomasso again found the trip on the short side when chasing home Tim Easterby’s Bollin Neil in a three-runner handicap at Musselburgh on his penultimate start over 1m6f.

Stepped up the extended two miles for the first time on the Knavesmire last time out, Phil Kirby’s charge certainly took a sizeable step forward and certainly caught the eye in defeat after making smooth headway towards the far side rail entering the final couple of furlongs. Fourth on that occasion, Tommaso was beaten just two lengths at the line by much higher-rated rivals and although he now has to prove that effort wasn’t just a flash in the pan, the four-year-old remains unexposed over staying trips on the flat and could go well at generous odds.

Power Of Darkness (16:45 Ascot, Porsche Handicap)

Returning to Newmarket’s July Festival following a 285-day break, it was pleasing to see that seven-year-old POWER OF DARKNESS retains plenty of his ability when finishing third at a huge price in the Weatherbys Hamilton Handicap over a mile off a mark of 92.

Slowly away on that particular occasion, Power Of Darkness soon found himself settled towards the rear of the twelve-runner field. Travelling noticeably well under Dane O’Neill approaching the final couple of furlongs, the seven-year-old gelding stayed on powerfully towards the stand side rail and although ultimately unable to reel in Charlie Appleby’s Godolphin pair, it was a promising return to action nonetheless from Power of Darkness and perhaps that effort in third can be upgraded – Achieved quicker sectionals than the front two on that occasion and winners at Newmarket that day all raced handily or prominently throughout.

Lining up at Ascot off the same mark this weekend, it would be no surprise to see Power Of Darkness involved in the finish following his promising seasonal return and Marcus Tregoning’s seven-year-old is well worth supporting at around 8/1.
