We have all the statistics and trends for the Champion Hurdle, which is the feature race on day one of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival and takes place on Tuesday 12th March. Reigning champion Constitution Hill is set to be a red-hot favourite for this year’s 2m Grade 1 contest and Nicky Henderson’s hotpot is the one to beat, but could any of the stats provide any hope for any of his rivals?
Often dominated by the younger horses, the Champion Hurdle is a race that can often see youth outclass experience and in recent times the most successful age of a horse to win the Champion Hurdle is seven years old. Not since Sea Pigeon way back in 1981 has a horse aged ten or older claimed victory in the Champion Hurdle, so it’s certainly a young gun’s division.
Five-year-olds often find it tough stepping out of the juvenile sphere, but in the last 20 years there have been three five-year-olds to claim glory with the last of those being Espoir D’Allen back in 2019, but it’s often a horse with a little more experience on their CV that has claimed Champion Hurdle glory and it’s a race that can often see a horse win more than one Champion Hurdle.

Attracting the premier hurdlers in training the Champion Hurdle can often see a superstar emerge and currently we have the Nicky Henderson-trained Constitution Hill brushing allcomers aside to dominate the division and the Seven Barrows star is one off 11 winning favourites in the last 20 years.
Such has been the dominance of market leaders in recent times it’s often been a race that has seen limited runners line up and there have been four winners priced Evens or lower over the last decade. There can be some surprise, big-priced winners and the biggest-priced winner this century was Hardy Eustace in 2004 when he landed the prize for Dessie Hughes at 33/1, but it’s often a race to focus on those towards the head of the betting.
