A field of 20 horses appear in the initial entries for the 2024 Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Five of the first six home have all been slated to try their luck again, with last year’s winner Galopin Des Champs a clear favourite to defend his title after romping away with the Grade 1 Savills Chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting. He is joined from last year’s finishers by Bravemansgame, Conflated, Protektorat, and Betfair Chase winner Royale Pagaille.
Chief among the debutant Cheltenham Gold Cup entries for 2024 is Fastorslow. Martin Brassil’s charge has beaten Galopin Des Champs on the last two occasions they have met, including when battling to a gutsy success in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown over 2m4f. He was second in the Ultima Handicap Chase last season to Grand National hero Corach Rambler, who also appears in the entries.
Last season’s novices are headed by Gerri Colombe, who remains Gordon Elliott’s best chance of a second Gold Cup despite finishing 23 lengths behind Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown. His Cheltenham conqueror from last term, The Real Whacker also takes his place for Patrick Neville, while Stay Away Fay is the only novice this season to be chanced an entry.
Further big race winners from this season who are eyeing Gold Cup glory are King George victor Hewick, Bravemansgame’s Charlie Hall upsetter Gentlemansgame, Coral Gold Cup winner Datsalrightgino, and Welsh National destroyer Nassalam. The name Shishkin is likely to prove popular on 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup betting slips too.
Making up the field of 20, which can be viewed in full below, are former Cheltenham Festival winners Envoi Allen, L’Homme Presse and Monkfish, Ahoy Senor for Lucinda Russell, and Jungle Boogie for Henry De Bromhead.
