We have all the statistics and trends for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is the showpiece event at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival and takes place on Friday 15th March. The flagship race of the four-day National Hunt extravaganza, the Cheltenham Gold Cup attracts the premier staying chasers in training and is always a sensational contest.
In recent times the Cheltenham Gold Cup has been dominated by the young brigade with 23 of the last 24 winners being aged between seven and nine years old with the sole exception being Long Run, who won the 2011 race as a six-year-old. The last veteran to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup was Robert Alner’s Cool Dawn, who won the 1998 contest as a ten-year-old, so it’s certainly worth looking at the age bracket of seven to nine when trying to unearth the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Reigning champion Galopin Des Champs stormed to victory in the race last season as a seven-year-old and the Willie Mullins-trained superstar will attempt to emulate former stablemate Al Boum Photo, who won back-to-back Gold Cups, but the Irish phenomenon will face a whole plethora of classy staying chasers in what is set to be an enthralling renewal.

All the way back in 1990 there was a shock 100/1 winner in the shape of Norton’s Coin, but more recently it’s been a race dominated by those more fancied contenders.
