Age

In recent times the Cheltenham Gold Cup has been dominated by the young brigade with 23 of the last 24 winners being aged between seven and nine years old with the sole exception being Long Run, who won the 2011 race as a six-year-old. The last veteran to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup was Robert Alner’s Cool Dawn, who won the 1998 contest as a ten-year-old, so it’s certainly worth looking at the age bracket of seven to nine when trying to unearth the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Reigning champion Galopin Des Champs stormed to victory in the race last season as a seven-year-old and the Willie Mullins-trained superstar will attempt to emulate former stablemate Al Boum Photo, who won back-to-back Gold Cups, but the Irish phenomenon will face a whole plethora of classy staying chasers in what is set to be an enthralling renewal.

Starting Price

Some sensational National Hunt horses have tasted victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and it can often be a race that sees the cream rise to the top with the likes of Best Mate, Kauto Star and last year’s winner Galopin Des Champs all prevailing when sent off favourite.

In the last 20 years there have been a whopping ten winning favourites, so it’s often wise to look at the front end of the market, but there have been some boilovers in recent times and none more so than in 2014 when 20/1 outsider Lord Windermere was a shock winner for Jim Culloty and Davy Russell. All the way back in 1990 there was a shock 100/1 winner in the shape of Norton’s Coin, but more recently it’s been a race dominated by those more fancied contenders.

  • 9/4 to 5/1 – 8 winners
  • 11/2 to 9/1- 6 winners

Rating

Some of the highest rated horses in training will compete in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and while those lesser-rated horses will be seen competing in the handicaps during the four days of the Cheltenham Festival, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is open to the elite of the staying chasing sphere.

You often have to be officially rated in the 160s or 170s to claim Cheltenham Gold Cup glory with the highest rated winner in recent times being Long Run, who stormed to victory in the 2011 renewal off an official rating of 179. However, the abovementioned Lord Windermere was only rated 152 when he caused a shock win nearly a decade ago, so there can be shock results.

Official Rating Of Cheltenham Gold Cup Winners In Last 15 Years

  • 150-160 – 1 winner
  • 161-165 – 3 winners
  • 166-170 – 3 winners
  • 171-176 – 6 winners
  • 177+ – 2 winners
