Coral Gold Cup Runners 2024 – 14 Line Up For Newbury Highlight

14 horses remain in contention for the 2024 Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, scheduled for Saturday, 30th November. Only three runnings in the past decade have had fewer runners take part after final declarations, though the first four in the ante-post market have all stood their ground.

Generally favourite for the race, Colonel Harry is the most significant name still in contention for the race. He represents last year’s winning connections of Datsalrightgino, and boasts a very similar profile, as he will race off the same mark of 148 and is stepping up beyond 2m4f for the first time in his career.

The leading Irish hope for the race is Senior Chief, who has also been confirmed by Henry De Bromhead. The seven-year-old made the perfect start to his season with victory at Cheltenham last month, while two of his compatriots join him in the shape of Willie Mullins’ Horantzau d’Airy and Grandero Bello for Eddie & Patrick Harty. There may also be rare interest from France with Noel George & Amanda Zetterholm’s yard confirming General En Chef.

Victtorino is set to be another significant weekend runner for Venetia Williams after Royale Pagaille’s second straight Betfair Chase win last weekend, while second season chaser Broadway Boy and four-time chase winner Midnight River look set to be involved for the big name stables of Nigel Twiston-Davies and Dan Skelton respectively.

Unsurprisingly, the top three in the weights prior to confirmations have all been removed as they were also the first three in last weekend’s Betfair Chase (Royale Pagaille, Grey Dawning and Bravemansgame). Last season’s Ultima Handicap Chase winner Chianti Classico also did not feature among the confirmations, with trainer Kim Bailey having reported him an unlikely runner in the build-up.
