PETIT MOUCHOIR (1.30 Tipperary, 2pts win 3/1)

We know everything there is to know about PETIT MOUCHOIR but the flame still burns bright despite going without a win since 2017. However, that is a credit to the company he has been keeping with 12/14 starts coming in Grade 1 company with this a drop into Grade 3 level for just the second time in his career.

This race is similar to the one he was beaten in on seasonal return back in October by today’s rival Davids Charm. However, he went off at a blistering gallop (15 lengths clear at the first hurdle) that day and did far too much too soon and had bigger targets later on in the year.

He is officially rated 4lb higher than Aramon and 7lb above Davids Charm, but today receives 11lb from the former and 7lb from the latter and it is a positive to see connections enter stablemate Ornua who will likely make the running for Petit Mouchoir and allow him to settle in the early stages. We will know if our money is spent after the first two flights but he is the class act and is hard to oppose at the weights

JAANEH (1.50 Doncaster, 1pt win 11/4)

JAANEH is a horse I have been keeping a close eye on and it completely baffled me that she was a well-supported favourite in a novice contest last time out over 5f when connections have clearly been looking to handicap her and she steps up to a more suitable (visual and breeding) 7f on handicap debut here off a lowly rating of 62.

She ran well on debut despite a slow start and it was the same story at Haydock when she was unable to quicken on soft ground amongst good company under an easy ride. Two of the three horses that finished behind her are now rated 8lb and 15lb higher than her opening mark today, with one that finished a short head in front a winner off a 12lb higher mark and now rated 17ls higher than the selection.

This trip should see her in a better light and she can prove a different proposition here.

FOX VARDY (4.50 Newmarket, 1pt win 10/3)

FOX VARDY was well supported for this column when tipped up last week but was withdrawn before stalls entry. He sits on a very workable handicap mark of 83 based on his exploits last season and has been gelded during the winter.

He gets the services of Silvestre De Sousa who is 4/13 +£2.25 for this trainer with the jockey and horse proven to partner well, highlighted by two terrific rides last season winning at Windsor and running extremely close at Goodwood off this mark.

There is plenty more to come and he has shown that he handles the undulations of Newmarket when a good second behind an improver on the July Course on his last start over this trip. The drop back to 1m4f after being tried over 1m6f on soft ground at York looks the right move and he should be one to follow this season.
