Falmouth Stakes Runners – Strong Irish Challenge Abounds for Fillies & Mares’ Group 1

Seven fillies and mares remain in contention for the 2024 Falmouth Stakes, the first Group 1 of Newmarket’s July meeting on Friday, 12th July. The relatively condensed field, which still does not factor in final declarations, is headlined by recent Royal Ascot winner Porta Fortuna, who won the Coronation Stakes for Donnacha O’Brien three weeks ago.

That victory proved compensation for her narrow defeat in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket back in May. She is one of five prospective runners trained in Ireland as the visitors boast a dominant challenge.

Donnacha’s brother Joseph is responsible for the oldest runner in the race. A five, former Group 1 runner-up Rogue Millennium is another classy performer taking her chance here.

However, away from the O’Brien family, there remains depth to those raiding from Ireland. A Lilac Rolla was a gallant second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and is another among the Classic generation who get weight from their elders. She had been unbeaten before that runner-up finish, while Magical Sunset is another trained in the Emerald Isle, though she is yet to get her head in front for Adrian Murray.

The hosts are spearheaded by Running Lion, trained by John & Thady Gosden, who claimed the race in 2023 with Nashwa. Their four-year-old put recent form behind her when making all to win the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. She looks a progressive runner, as may Jabaara be for Roger Varian and Sirona for David Menuisier.
