1. PRIMO BACIO (Ed Walker, Richard Kingscote) 21/2

Classy filly last year who looked slightly unfortunate not to finish closer than fifth in this race when enduring a troubled run. Form took a dive afterwards, and she failed to beat a rival home on seasonal reappearance at Goodwood in April. Much better when third in the Duke Of Cambridge at Royal Ascot last time; second has won impressively since, but she can be free going and likes a decent pace to aim at, so wouldn’t want this to turn tactical.

2. SIBILA SPAIN (Christopher Head, Aurelien Lemaitre) 19/2

A winner of four of her eight starts, finishing fourth in both the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary and Prix de Diane last season. Backed up a promising seasonal return when claiming a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud when last seen in May. Held up that day but she usually leads and could be the potential pace angle into this. A late withdrawal from Royal Ascot having got upset in the stalls, yet this race is even tougher and her Group 1 record is currently 0-3.

3. INSPIRAL (John & Thady Gosden, Frankie Dettori) 1/4

Exceptional filly who failed to taste defeat in four starts as a juvenile, having Prosperous Voyage directly behind on two occasions including in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October. An interrupted preparation saw her miss the 1000 Guineas, but she was back with a bang when blitzing a strong field (including both Prosperous Voyage and Sandrine) in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last time. Wasn’t given the full oracle that day and connections feel she could be better with the run under her belt, which is a scary proposition for the rest of these.

4. PROSPEROUS VOYAGE (Ralph Beckett, Rob Hornby) 9/1

Far better than a career strike rate of 1-8 suggests, bumping into Inspiral in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies’ Mile on her final two juvenile outings. Came agonisingly close to causing a shock when a neck runner-up in the 1000 Guineas on her 3yo debut, but she failed to back that showing up when down the field at Royal Ascot last time. That evidently wasn’t her true running for whatever reason, but it brought her record against Inspiral to 0-3 and it should be 0-4 after this race.

5. SANDRINE (Andrew Balding, David Probert) 13/1

Winner of her first three juvenile starts, including the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge on this card, but she’s failed to add to her tally in four subsequent runs. Fifth in the 1000 Guineas and seventh in the Coronation Stakes in two starts this season, but she’s had excuses on neither occasion and whilst she stays a mile she doesn’t at this stage look like a Group 1 filly over this trip.

Verdict

This should be all about INSPIRAL, who was the leading juvenile filly around last season, winning all four starts culminating in Group 1 success in the Fillies’ Mile. An interrupted preparation forced connections to miss her intended comeback in the 1000 Guineas, but she returned with a flourish when slamming her rivals in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. That brought her career record to 5-5, and it’s frightening to think that we mightn’t have seen the best of her just yet, so she’s very tough to oppose. Primo Bacio could put it up most to the selection with her recent Royal Ascot third looking respectable form, for all that she wouldn’t want this to turn tactical. Prosperous Voyage disappointed last time but her previous 1000 Guineas second is decent form and she might prove best of the rest.

  1. INSPIRAL
  2. Primo Bacio
  3. Prosperous Voyage
