There were 17 horses scratched at the latest entry stage for the 2024 Grand National, which takes place at Aintree racecourse on Saturday 13th April with the top weight Hewick being one of those to be taken out of the list of potential runners by Shark Hanlon.
In the last scratching stage before the five-day confirmation stage takes place on Monday 8th April, there were some notable names to be taken out of the list and alongside Hewick, who also failed to line up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it has also seen Jonjo O’Neill’s Monbeg Genius taken out of the field after he ran poorly in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.
Paul Nicholls had announced earlier this week that his star stayer Threeunderthrufive won’t be travelling up to Merseyside for a crack at the Grand National and instead will head to the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown Park at the end of the National Hunt season.
Other notable absentees from this year’s race that will see only 34 horses line up, are Longhouse Poet, who has run well in the race before, but won’t be taking his chance, and Mister Coffey, who led for a long way in last year’s contest before being outstayed.
Lucinda Russell’s reigning champion Corach Rambler is a hot favourite for the race in the latest 2024 Grand National Odds and the recent Cheltenham Gold Cup third has kept his place in the line-up, while Hewick’s defection will mean Conflated will now run off top weight in what is set to be a sensational renewal on the final day of a sparkling Grand National festival.
