I Am Maximus – Willie Mullins

Sent off joint favourite for this race 12 months ago, I AM MAXIMUS produced one of the finest performances in recent times to cruise to a seven-and-a-half length victory over Delta Work. Now, the Willie Mullins-trained star is back to try and emulate Tiger Roll by winning back-to-back Grand National and the JP McManus-owned raider is well fancied to do the double. He’s 8lbs higher this time around, but he was a cut above his rivals in 2024, so off top weight he has to be a leading fancy for Ireland.

Stumptown – Gavin Cromwell

Hugely progressive over the last two seasons, STUMPTOWN heads to Aintree on the back of an impressive victory in the Cross Country Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and Gavin Cromwell’s eight-year-old will look to emulate the abovementioned Tiger Roll by winning the National after claiming Cross Country glory the month before. He looks to still be improving and is one that should excel over this stamina test and is rightly sitting towards the summit of the latest Grand National Odds for Saturday’s race.

Iroko – Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero

With only one win in seven chase starts, IROKO certainly doesn’t have the CV of some of his adversaries at the top of the betting, but the Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero-trained seven-year-old has some fine runs in defeat on his record and is one of the leading UK hopes. Last seen finishing second to proven Grade 1 chaser Grey Dawning in the Premier Chase at Kelso, he’s another that will carry the famous green and gold silks of JP McManus, and he’s one that may not be in the handicapper’s grip so far and could be still improving.

Hewick – Shark Hanlon

A real trailblazer in recent seasons for Shark Hanlon, HEWICK has fast become one of the most-loved horses in training. A former winner of the Grade 2 Oaksey Chase at Sandown Park, the Irish raider also has an American Grand National victory on his record, while he was a shock winner of the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park back in 2023. Proven at the top level, he’s set for his first run in this contest, and if he can take to the task then is certainly one that warrants respect.

Vanillier – Gavin Cromwell

Second in the 2023 Grand National, when finishing like a train in the closing stages, VANILLIER failed to emulate that display in the race last year when finishing 14th. However, Gavin Cromwell’s raider appears to be back firing on all cylinders, as having won a Cross Country Chase at Punchestown back in February he then followed up with a fine third behind Stumptown in the Cross Country at Cheltenham. Proven around this track, he’s one that will prove popular with the punters and providing he doesn’t get too far back then has to be a huge each-way contender.

Intense Raffles – Thomas Gibney

Thomas Gibney’s INTENSE RAFFLES ended last season with a stunning victory in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse and the seven-year-old will be now looking to add the British version to his record on Saturday. He has warmed up for this event with an excellent second placed finish in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse back in February, so that should sweeten him up for a first crack at the unique Aintree assignment.
