Grand National Weights – I Am Maximus to Concede Weight to All in Repeat Bid

The British handicapper has announced the weights for the 2025 renewal of the Grand National, as defending champion I Am Maximus will carry top-weight of 11st 12lb if he wishes to emulate Tiger Roll in winning back-to-back renewals of the world’s most famous steeplechase.

Willie Mullins’ charge won the race decisively last season and ran a creditable race in the Irish Gold Cup recently, but will face a tough task to retain his title conceding 3lb and more to all of the rivals he will face. His converted mark of 167 is 8lb higher than he won off last year, as well as that which Tiger Roll won his second Grand National off.

In the same colours of owner JP McManus, Inothewayurthinkin has been supported into favouritism for the 2025 Grand National. Gavin Cromwell had initially hinted that this would not be the year for his Cheltenham Festival and Grade 1 winner in this race, but after being allocated 11st 5lb, the market spoke favourably to his chances. He would be carrying 1lb less than I Am Maximus did last season.

Minella Indo, who was third in the race last season, will carry less weight this time around: the former Gold Cup winner is on a mark of 158, 1lb lower in the handicap and thus allocated 3lb less on 11st 3lb. Galvin, who finished fourth, would also shoulder 3lb less on 10st 13lb.

This will be the second renewal of the Grand National where the number of runners has been restricted to 34 from 40. As a result, Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Broadway Boy sits on the current cut line on 10st 9lb with his mark of 150, with three-time Grand National runner Coko Beach at the top of those currently looking in from outside as the number 35.

2024 Irish Grand National winner Intense Raffles is narrowly within the top 34 already too, having been allocated 10st 10lb and a mark of 151. However, among the fancied runners currently requiring absentees is Meetingofthewaters, seventh last year and in the hands of Willie Mullins, as well as 2023 runner-up Vanillier, former Coral Gold Cup third Monbeg Genius, Scottish National winner Macdermott and Gordon Elliott’s Three Card Brag.

Overall, 13 of the top 34 are British-trained, with Irish trainers dominating once again with 21, including eight of the top ten, and 15 of the top 18.
