CADILLAC – (1.50 Newbury) 6/4

ITV’s afternoon begins with a Listed contest over 1m2f at Newbury. It looks an opportunity for CADILLAC, a recent runner-up at Royal Ascot.

The four-year-old had spent the majority of his career with Jessica Harrington, winning at Group 2 level as a juvenile, as well as claiming a Group 3 prize last June over this trip at the Curragh. He had started this season solidly too, winning the Listed Glencairn Stakes in June while he changed yards just before Royal Ascot began.

He is now with Kevin Philippart De Foy, for whom he technically ran at Ascot having been with him for just a day. He will now have had four-and-a-half weeks to acclimatise to his new surroundings and should be just as well-primed.

At this level, he is the one to beat regardless of conceding 3lb and more all round. Only a runaway winner prevented him at the royal meeting and compensation should be gained in this lineup.

GALILEO SILVER – (2:06 Market Rasen)

Three horses arriving off a victory head the betting for this handicap hurdle and Sam Thomas’ GALILEO SILVER is backed to follow up a recent Ffos Las win.

He has finished first or second in seven of his nine hurdles starts, so is well worth his place challenging for favouritism. Indeed, those represent his most recent seen starts over hurdles, so while he has often found one too good, he is unlikely to be far away.

He made all at Ffos Las, which may have shown the race was run to his benefit. However, he was fairly well in control heading to the final flight and though his lead was reduced to a length by the line, he was value for a decent victory.

The seven-year-old is only up 4lb for that win, which came in first-time cheekpieces. He certainly stays this trip, for which he has also improved and it would be a surprise if he did not feature highly.

Newbury Racecourse

A top-class Flat and National Hunt track, Newbury’s left-handed, galloping course provides a true test of stamina, particularly in wet conditions. The highlights of their National Hunt season include the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup run at the end of November and the Betfair Hurdle, one of Europe’s richest handicap Hurdles, which takes place in February and is increasingly a springboard for live Supreme Novice Hurdle and Champion Hurdle candidates for the Cheltenham Festival the following month. On the Flat, the jewel in their crown is the Group 1 Qipco Lockinge Stakes in May. Newbury can also boast first-class facilities and a superb view of the whole track.

ROCK EAGLE – (2:21 Newbury) 9/2

Both Going Gone and Reshoun put in eyecatching performances last time out, but ROCK EAGLE is the horse who is the most tempting.

Ralph Beckett’s charge has consistently run good races over long distances, finishing third to Trueshan in a conditions event at Salisbury at the end of the 2020 season, prior to being fifth in the Cesarewitch. After a few successful runs on the all-weather, he endured 421 days off the track.

Since then, he has put in two decent efforts without threatening at Haydock and Ascot, though the former was over an inadequately short trip, while the latter was in a strong race at the royal meeting. He was racing with a tongue tie for the first time then as well, while the drop back to 2m½f should be ideal here.

Conditions suit him, he should now be back to full fitness and the yard are in excellent form, with five winners from their last 11 runners at time of writing.

INGLEBY HOLLOW – (2:41 Market Rasen)

There has not been a lot wrong with the recent efforts of the ten-year-old INGLEBY HOLLOW and he looks a fine each-way option in here.

His form in 2022 reads 34435 and he has only been beaten more than ten lengths once. Even then, he was placed (fourth of 16 in a handicap) and overall he has been dropped 1lb by the handicapper across those five races.

He is just 1lb above his last winning mark though and he was unlucky last time out at Cartmel when struggling to get out of a pocket at a crucial time. Nathan Moscrop will have rued that and he should make sure there is greater room for him in this slightly smaller field.

Very similar misfortune befell him in this race last year, but it is worth backing him to be a bit luckier. Trip and ground should see him in his element and he is a sound hurdler.

ROHAAN – (2:56 Newbury) 5/1

While he has not always showed his best in Group company, ROHAAN’s effort to win the Wokingham for a second year running was close to a par with anyone in the Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes.

Admittedly, it was a brilliant ride by Ryan Moore, who weaved and dipped in and out on a very brave stands side line. Ultimately, he could have had much worse luck on another day, but instead he cruised through for the win.

Off a mark of 109, that was a substantial run which this horse is very capable of on a going day. With that handicap likely to have been the mid-season target, there is a chance that David Evans will have him much more primed for this run than when he was down the field in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes back in May.

This field is surprisingly plentiful, which should be ideal for him, as he loves to come off a strong pace. Hollie Doyle is a very able deputy for Moore and further success awaits.

FRANCKY DU BERLAIS – (3:14 Market Rasen) 13/2

Last year’s winner FRANCKY DU BERLAIS can go back-to-back in the Summer Plate off only 2lb higher than last year.

Fergal O’Brien’s Mortlach is on a terrific run, but the selection, after having struggled between October and December, has since recovered his form. That began with a fine run for fourth in the Topham Handicap Chase at the Grand National meeting.

He had sunk to a mark of 135 by that point, but he truly regained his best form next time out. The nine-year-old won at Uttoxeter and while there was one blip at Ffos Las, he was then third to Jerrysback in the Summer Cup back at Uttoxeter.

His current mark of 139 is definitely one he can be competitive off, while his recent runs have all been over 3m or beyond. This more intermediate trip may be slightly preferable and he should make a very good go of his defence.

Today’s Racecards

DARE TO HOPE – (3:30 Newbury) 14/1

Richard’s Hannon and Fahey have a tremendous recent record in this race. The pair have a near monopoly on the contest, having taken seven of the last nine renewals.

It is the latter of those who is taken to have the winner in 2022. DARE TO HOPE was perhaps slightly disappointing at Ripon last time, but he was conceding 9lb to the first. It is his first run which is of more interest in the context of this race though.

Fahey’s charge was a winner at Nottingham over this 5f trip and beat into second none other than Rocket Rodney, the Royal Ascot runner-up and recent Listed winner at Sandown. That is a top piece of form, for all that rival may not have been 100% first time out.

Nevertheless, it would have taken a good performance to beat him and at the weights, Dare To Hope looks to have a fine chance of challenging. He also has a double-figure draw, which is crucial given that horses drawn in stall ten and above have won every running since 2012.

EMILY UPJOHN – (3:35 Curragh) 1/2

There could be an each-way play here in either Emily Dickinson or Cairde Go Deo, but EMILY UPJOHN should be winning this comfortably.

Those of a certain persuasion will inevitably be worried about backing a Gosden-trained odds-on shot after Inspiral’s stunning defeat at 1/7 in the Falmouth Stakes. However, this should be different, as this giant three-year-old, by Sea the Stars, is fully fit after three runs this season and should improve on her effort in the Oaks.

The primary reason for that is that she should not miss the break by anywhere near as much as she did at Epsom. She was unlucky to stumble that day, but still made up all but a short head on the winner Tuesday.

Aidan O’Brien’s filly does not take her chance here and there does not look a replacement in terms of calibre. As long as she breaks evenly, or even if she doesn’t, she should be getting the job done before heading onto even bigger prizes.
