Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth feature among the 23 horses entered for the 2025 Mares’ Hurdle, which will take place on day one of the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday 11th March. We take a look at the possible runners for the valuable Grade 1 prize.

Brighterdaysahead was beaten by Golden Ace in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at last year’s Cheltenham Festival, but Gordon Elliott’s star mare has come on leaps and bounds since then and having won at Down Royal on her comeback run she then got the better of reigning Champion Hurdle winner State Man on two separate occasions. A shock victory in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown was followed by a 30-length annihilation of the Willie Mullins-trained star over Christmas at Leopardstown. Two dominant victories have had many believing she should be heading down the Champion Hurdle route, and she has been given an entry for that Championship race on day one of the festival, so it will be intriguing to see where she lines up.
Lossiemouth was a stunning winner of the Mares’ Hurdle last season and is another that sits prominently in the latest ante-post betting. Another starlet from the Willie Mullins stable she failed to fire on her comeback run in the Christmas Hurdle, when well beaten by Constitution Hill, but she’s shown that she’s a class act on her day and will have to be respected. Like Brighterdaysahead she also holds a Champion Hurdle entry and will be a huge player in that race as well, but she could be looking to bounce back to winning ways in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham in a couple of weeks before the Mullins team decide where she will run in March.

Second in the Triumph Hurdle at last year’s Cheltenham Festival, Kargese ended the year with a fine victory in a Grade 1 event at the Punchestown Festival and she will be another notable shot fired by the Mullins gun here. Yet to be seen on the track this season, she has to be regarded a leading player if building on that juvenile form from last season.
Henry De Bromhead’s July Flower got the better of Kala Conti and Jetara in a Grade 3 event at Leopardstown last month in a race that saw Lot Of Joy disappoint and all four of those decent mares hold an entry, while Jade De Grugy is another available at single figures in the latest betting and was a Grade 1 winner at Fairyhouse last season.

Much of this race will revolve around which races Brighterdaysahead and Lossiemouth run in at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, so it’s sure to be a fascinating ante-post betting market over the coming weeks. Check out the full 2025 Mares’ Hurdle entry list below.
