Eyecatchers Last Time Out

Magical Merlin (14:00 Salisbury, Molson Coors British EBF Novice Stakes) – 5th, Newbury 9th June.

MAGICAL MERLIN certainly went down as one to follow after putting in good late work on his debut over the extended six furlongs at Newbury back in June. Sent off at 33/1, the son of Kodiac travelled noticeably well throughout the contest but was ultimately unable to quicken at a crucial stage and crossed the line in fifth. Beaten just under three lengths, Roger Carlton’s newcomer was far from disgraced behind Charlie Appleby’s subsequent Group 2 performer Mysterious Night. Given the yard’s juveniles often improve for their first outing on track, it would be no surprise to see Magical Merlin tale a sizeable step forward on Wednesday afternoon and a bold bid looks assured with Andrea Atzeni taking over in the saddle.

Spirit Of Applause (14:40 Beverley, Jobs Butler Recruitment EBF Maiden Stakes) – 2nd, York 22nd July

Tim Easterby will have been thrilled with the debut performance of SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE when finishing runner-up in a Class 3 novice at York just nineteen days ago. Seemingly unfancied in the market at 66/1, the gelded son of Charm Spirit belied his lengthy odds with a tremendous effort over the seven-furlong trip under jockey James Sullivan. Held up off the pace, Tim Easterby’s juvenile travelled powerfully in behind the leaders and was briefly short of room entering the final could of furlongs. Switched to the far side rail, Spirit Of Applause kept on strongly in the closing stages once the gaps eventually appeared and ultimately crossed the line comfortably clear of the remainder in second. Although the form of that contest is yet to be thoroughly tested, Spirit Of Applause is clearly a useful prospect in the making for connections and he can hopefully put his experience to good use at Beverley on Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday’s Trainer To Follow – Kevin Philippart De Foy

Newmarket handler Kevin Philippart De Foy recorded two winners and two seconds from his four runners on Monday and bids for an across-the-card four-timer on Wednesday.

D Day Odette (15:20 Yarmouth, Follow AtTheRaces On Twitter Maiden Handicap)

Jockey Jack Mitchell has a healthy 22% strike rate when teaming up with Kevin Philippart De Foy and the pair will be confident of improving that record with D DAY ODETTE on Wednesday afternoon.

The three-year-old filly remains winless in her four starts to date but has certainly hinted that her turn isn’t far away in her first few outings for this yard. Fourth over a mile on her seasonal reappearance at Windsor, the daughter of Lawman built on that encouraging effort when only finding one too good over the same trip at Goodwood on her penultimate outing. Switched to handicaps off an opening mark of 75 when last seen, D Day Odette again ran a race full of promise, travelling strongly for the majority of the one-mile contest before finishing a respectable third behind a dual-scorer in Roger Charlton’s well-treated filly Ashky.

With stamina influences in her pedigree, D Day Odette should be suited by the step up to ten furlongs on Wednesday afternoon and it would be no surprise to see her shed the maiden tag at the fifth time of asking from an unchanged mark.

Tuddenham Mill (17:30 Ffos Las, Cazoo EBF Restricted Novice Stakes)

Kevin Philippart De Foy’s first runner at Ffos Las on Wednesday evening comes in the shape of TUDDENHAM HILL, who will look to get off the mark at the fourth attempt following some creditable efforts in defeat this term.

A son of Holy Roman Emperor, the two-year-old made an eye-catching start for connections when losing out by just a head on his debut at Windsor over six furlongs in May. Third on that occasion, Tuddenham Mill went on to fill that same position on his second racecourse outing when proving no match for Patrick Owens’ unbeaten colt Wahaaj at Nottingham the following month. Stepped up to seven furlongs for the first time at Epsom just thirteen days ago, Kevin Philippart De Foy’s colt was certainly unlucky not to finish closer when crossing the line in third. Beaten three lengths at the line, Tuddenham Mill didn’t look entirely at home on Epsom’s cambers after becoming noticeably unbalanced approaching the final furlong.

Reverting to a more conventional track on Wednesday, Tuddenham Mill should be able to reverse the form with Epsom second Saxon Scene for that three parts of a length defeat and it will be disappointing if the the-two-year-old fails to go close in this fairly modest novice event.

Rikona (18:40 Ffos Las, Wales & West Horseboxes Maiden Handicap Fillies’ Stakes)

Formerly trained by Simon Dow, it will be interesting to see which way RIKONA goes in the market following her recent move to Kevin Philippart De Foy’s yard.

A lightly-raced maiden, she made a relatively quiet introduction when finishing down the field on soft ground at Newbury last season despite attracting plenty of strong support beforehand. Fourth on her seasonal reappearance over ten furlongs at Lingfield back in February, the three-year-old filly built on that return to action when narrowly denied over that course and distance in March before going on to run above market expectations when finishing a creditable fourth at 40/1 at Kempton off an opening mark of 66.

Dropped 2lb to a mark of 64, Rikona should have plenty more to offer now entering the handicapping ranks for new connections and with talented claimer, Taylor Fisher taking a handy 7lb off her back on Wednesday evening, Kevin Philippart De Foy’s latest recruit will be expected to make a winning stable debut.

Elsals (19:15 Ffos Las, Cazoo Handicap

The last of Kevin Philippart De Foy’s quartet comes in the fifth race at Ffos Las, where the three-year-old ELSALS will look to pick up where he left off and complete the hat-trick on his return to the track following a short break.

Despite being turned over on his stable debut at prohibitive odds on the all-weather surface at Lingfield back in April, the gelded son of Havana Gold certainly improved for that opening outing and went from strength to strength in his subsequent outings for the yard. Returning to Lingfield in May, the three-year-old readily shed the maiden tag in impressive fashion over seven furlongs under Daniel Muscutt, pulling effortlessly clear of a next-time-out winner in the process. Well found in the market once more on his following start at Haydock, Elsals doubled his tally with a determined effort on his handicap debut off 78, gamely fending off the challenge of Ed Walker’s subsequent dual scorer Zulu Tracker by a head on the run to the line.

Although the move to six furlongs is somewhat of a surprise on Wednesday evening, the three-year-old should be able to cope with the drop in trip and certainly has plenty of scope for further improvement moving forward.

Rare Course Visitor – Simon Pearce

Newmarket trainer Simon Pearce travels up to Beverley for just the second time on Wednesday afternoon with just the sole runner in FRISKY (17:10 Beverley).

The hat-trick-seeking Enraged is entitled to plenty of respect after scoring over course and distance last time out, however, this represents a good opportunity for handicap debutant FRISKY to double her tally after thumping her three rivals in novice company at Leicester last month.

Formerly trained by Karl Burke, the daughter of Bated Breath has proven to be a consistent performer for Simon Pearce this season and has arguably been unlucky not to get her head in front sooner for new connections. Beaten just three parts of a length on her final juvenile start last year, she returned this term with a creditable effort at Pontefract before bumping into James Tate’s Group-bound sprinter Royal Aclaim at Bath back in June.

Rated 71, Frisky certainly has the ability to make her mark in the handicapping ranks and given she has proven her aptitude for stiff tracks in the past, the three-year-old should relish the climb to the line at Beverley on Wednesday afternoon and is well berthed in stall 3.
