CASUAL REPLY (fourth, 8.6f handicap, Wolverhampton, Saturday, November 14)

The early pace held up and it was some effort by CASUAL REPLY, last on turning into the straight, to weave her way through into a 16-1 fourth. This was an improved effort in the first-time tongue-tie and she can be supported next time, especially if stepped back up in trip.

.

DOG OF WAR (eighth, 2m handicap hurdle, Leicester, Monday, November 16)

It’s hard to win around the inside in hurdle races on deep ground at Leicester and Dan Skelton’s DOG OF WAR was always poorly positioned in this 2m contest. He’d also challenged closer to the inside than ideal when third at Wetherby the time before and is worth persevering with, despite his eight-race maiden status.

.

GRANGECLAREVIEW (ninth, 7f novice auction, Chelmsford, Thursday, November 12)

Richard Fahey’s juvenile debutant ran in the same race as To The Bar (see below), running much better than his ninth position suggests. The 33-1 shot was left with plenty to do after blowing the start but kept on well and would have finished much closer had he not been persistently denied a clear run.

HENRI LE BON (sixth, 2m handicap hurdle, Leicester, Monday, November 16)

Kerry Lee’s HENRI LE BON was another ‘swamp dweller’ in the same race as Dog Of War, finishing two places ahead of that rival after taking the inside route. He’s not had many opportunities in handicap hurdles and should find a small race.

.

MAGIC SAINT (won, 2m handicap chase, Cheltenham, Friday, November 13)

Pre-race, I was confident that MAGIC SAINT would struggle, having shown little in three previous visits to Cheltenham. However, all came in big fields, two of them over 2m4f+. He was well held over 2m4f at Aintree on his comeback, finishing sixth of 12, but the cut back to 2m in a single-figure line-up clearly helped and he’s now 2-2 at this trip since wind surgery.

.

MYBURG (fifth, 2m novices’ hurdle, Leicester, Monday, November 16)

MYBURG may have started at 150-1 but went into plenty of notebooks after racing keenly in the lead and sticking to the inside rail like glue. The ground was obviously slower on the inside and it’s to his credit that he stayed in contention as long as he did.

.

POWER OF STATES (won, 1m2f handicap, Chelmsford, Thursday, November 11)

POWER OF STATES took his all-weather form figures to 1211 (3-4) when landing the 1m2f Class 4 handicap, with that sole defeat by a short head, and looks well ahead of the handicapper. Hugo Palmer now has figures of 21111211 (6-8) when running progeny of Lope De Vega at the Essex venue and Power Of States looks one to follow closely this winter.

TANGO ECHO CHARLIE (fourth, 2m4f handicap hurdle, Leicester, Monday, November 16)

TANGO ECHO CHARLIE has proved expensive to follow since joining Dr Richard Newland, tasting defeat at odds of 6-1, 13-8f, 5-2, 11-2 and 4-1. However, he raced on the slowest part of the track on his way to a front-running eight-length fourth and might prove better suited by a left-handed track next time.

.

THIRD TIME LUCKI (second, Grade 2 novices’ hurdle, Cheltenham, Sunday, November 15)

Held up off a very steady early pace, THIRD TIME LUCKI was caught out when the pace quickened and had to settle for second place, just under four lengths behind the winner. He won well at Wetherby the time before, despite racing on the slowest part of the track, and I wonder if trainer Dan Skelton will be tempted to take the handicap route with races such as the Betfair Hurdle and County Hurdle likely to suit.

.

TO THE BAR (fifth, 7f novice auction, Chelmsford, Thursday, November 12)

The Richard Hughes-trained newcomer attracted plenty of market support despite a tricky draw in stall 8 of 12 and a pedigree that screams ‘Wolverhampton’. He showed obvious signs of greenness and raced wider than ideal on his way to a respectable fifth. He’ll be very interesting next time, especially if switched to Tapeta.
