AERION POWER (Newbury, Saturday, September 19)

On a track that was giving low-drawn prominent racers a huge edge it was always going to be difficult for AERION POWER under a patient ride from stall 11 of 13. His five-length fifth was better than it looked and he can be backed next time.

BARBILL (Ay, Saturday, September 19)

BARBILL was only 17th of 24 in the Ayr Gold Cup but he usually struggles in big fields. Four of his five wins have come in fields of ten or fewer runners and the other in a split field of 18 at the Curragh when he raced with just nine rivals. He could bounce back in a smaller field next time.

BERNARDO O’REILLY (Ayr, Saturday, September 19)

BERNARDO O’REILLY fared best of those drawn middle to high when sixth in the Ayr Silver Cup and may have been closer had he not been hampered. He struggles on extremes of going but can be backed the next time he encounters 6f and good or good to soft going.

BIELSA (Ayr, Saturday, September 19)

BIELSA won three of his first four career starts but has struggled since, finishing 19th when favourite for this year’s Wokingham in June before his Haydock fifth the following month. He again disappointed on his return from wind surgery earlier this month but showed signs of his old spark when ninth of 24 in the Ayr Gold Cup last Saturday, doing well to finish three lengths behind the winner as he was one of only two to race against the nearside rail. I’ll be giving him one more chance.

BRUNCH (Ayr, Saturday, September 19)

BRUNCH, bidding to make it five wins from six starts since his racecourse debut, was just pipped into second place by Johan. He was shoved up 6lb for last month’s York win but it’s been hard for the handicapper to get to grips with Michael Dods’ progressive 3yo, as he tends to come from off the pace and do just enough. He’s gone up another 3lb to a mark of 100 but will still be dangerous in handicaps and could yet develop into a Listed/Group performer.

EPIC ENDEAVOUR (Newbury, Saturday, September 19)

Newbury’s straight course was massively favouring early pace last week but EPIC ENDEAVOUR makes the eyecatchers list despite winning from the front in the 7f Heatherworld Stud Handicap.

Yes, the track was favouring his running style, but he wasn’t best drawn in stall 10 of 17 and he raced on the stands’ side half of the track where the ground was slowest. He was also taken on for the lead, doing well to hold on whereas the other pace horses dropped away to finish 7th, 11th, 12th and 15th.

EXPECT TO SUCCEED (Newbury, Saturday, September 19)

Roger Varian’s 16-1 newcomer was beaten by more than 14 lengths into ninth of the 13 runners but a slow start from a high draw left him with a mountain to climb. Switched to challenge widest of all towards the stands’ rail (where the ground was slowest), he shaped better than his finishing positions suggests and will be of particular interest at Kempton where his sire gets plenty of winners.

MOTAGALLY (Bath, Monday, September 14)

MOTAGALLY usually struggles on straight courses but this smooth success took his record on turning tracks to 1341111 (5-7). Dear Mr Hills, please enter him at Chester.

TINTO ( Newbury, Saturday, September 19)

Amanda Perrett has gone over two months since a winner and the combination of high draw and hold-up ride made life even tougher for TINTO in the Group 3 sprint. All six of his career wins have come in handicaps and he’s back down to his last winning mark of 100.

VIVID IMAGINATION (Newbury, Saturday, September 19)

Form figures of 11th of 11, 6th of 9 and 11th of 11 are hardly enticing but that 200-1 sixth when beaten by just over three lengths against the draw/pace bias at Newbury last Saturday is worthy of an upgrade. A quick run on the all-weather just four days later suggests she’s being prepped for a nursery in the near future.
