ARNHEM (Dundalk, Friday, September 25)

High to middle draws were again favoured, with the winners drawn in stalls 13 of 13, 12 of 14, 13 of 14, 5 of 14, 11 of 14, 9 of 14, 4 of 14 and 13 of 14. ARNHEM (stall 5 of 14) raced closer to the inside rail than ideal when justifying favouritism in the 6f apprentice handicap and can be followed until beaten.

BOARDMAN (Chester, Sunday, September 27)

BOARDMAN, a winner on turf in France last spring, had failed to score in three runs for Joe Tuite but was a big eyecatcher in the 7f handicap on his debut for Tim Easterby. Sent off at 33-1, he was very slowly away on this pace-favouring track and was still last on turning into the home straight. He made good late progress against the rail to grab fifth and will surely find another race on this evidence.

CASTLE QUARTER (Newcastle, Friday, September 25)

The strong wind, half into their faces in the straight, made life incredibly tough for front-runners and 6-1 shot CASTLE QUARTER can be forgiven his seventh of 14 after racing prominently into the wind.

CROESO CYMRAEG (Goodwood, Wednesday, September 23)

CROESO CYMRAEG, impressive over 1m3f on good ground here on his penultimate start, was only fifth in the soft-ground 1m1f handicap but wasn’t helped by ducking up the inside rail to challenge where the ground looked slowest. He can be backed to bounce back on quicker ground or an all-weather surface.

DREAM HOUSE (Redcar, Wednesday, September 23)

They raced far side in the early races on the straight course but Ben Curtis took Dapper Man (stall 7 of 8) to race alone against the nearside rail in the 5f Class 5 handicap and he duly bolted up by nine lengths. The runner-up (stall 8) was the only other runner to race anywhere near the favoured rail. DREAM HOUSE fared bets of the main bunch and can be supported next time despite finished almost 11 lengths behind the winner here.

HARRY’S RIDGE (Redcar, Wednesday, September 23)

Those who followed the Dapper Man bias into the next sprint race – the 6f Class 6 handicap - were rewarded when stalls 17, 18, 16, 14 and 15 filled the first five places. The first three home were priced at 7-1, 100-1 and 40-1 and perming the three highest drawn runners in a 6 x £1 combination tricasts would have copped you over £12,500. 5-4 favourite HARRY’S RIDGE had zero chance from stall 1 and had to settle for sixth place, just over ten lengths behind the winner. He’s the one to take from the race.

HART STOPPER (Pontefract, Thursday, September 24)

HART STOPPER just missed out on a place when I put him up as a bet on his stable debut on September 10th, finishing an 18-1 fifth at Doncaster, but I was happy to oppose him here as the stiff track was unlikely to suit (the majority of his wins for Stuart Williams came on flat tracks such as Haydock, Windsor and Yarmouth). He was also poorly drawn in stall 3 of 8 (the usual bias favouring low draws was flipped on its head thanks to rain on already watered going) and he did well to finish just over two lengths behind the winner in seventh place after challenging furthest from the favoured rail.

JUAN DE MONTALBAN (Goodwood, Wednesday, September 23)

The Goodwood track was eating front-runners alive and JUAN DE MONTALBAN can be forgiven his odds-on flop after making the running in the 1m2f maiden. He showed plenty when a 25-1 fourth at Haydock on his debut and the market could overreact to this performance next time.

SHEEPSCAR LAD (Redcar, Wednesday, September 23)

SHEEPSCAR LAD was another who fared best of the far side bunch in a sprint handicap at Redcar, finishing a nine-length sixth in first-time blinkers. He pulled more than eight lengths clear of the next horse not to race nearside and can be supported next time.

THAAYER (Newcastle, Friday, September 25)

THAAYER finished just behind CASTLE QUARTER when making the running into the wind and can be forgiven his 5-1 eighth of 14.
