Newmarket Through The Card Selections – Tips For All Seven Races On The July Course

Away from the ITV cameras, Newmarket hosts a competitive card on its July course. We have selections in each race from HQ below, alongside an exclusive 888Sport offer, which provides £30 in Free Bets + A £10 Casino Bonus.

AMERICAN BELLE – (1.42 Newmarket)

Divina Grace has a better bare form number to her name, while Puntarelle now has a little more experience, coupled with improvement between her first and second races, but it is AMERICAN BELLE who looks likeliest to step forward from her debut run.

James Fanshawe’s filly is by the speedy Starspangledbanner, but there is also plenty of winning talent on her dam’s side as well. She also made a likeable start to her racing career at Doncaster back in June.

She was third behind Hugo Palmer’s Ibiza love that day, with that horse going on to run in Group company at Royal Ascot. The sixth in that race has won since, so there is enough depth in that race to suggest this filly has more to offer.

This 7f trip should be no issue based on how she travelled through that race and she is likely to be right in contention.

FIGHTING TEMERAIRE – (2:16 Newmarket)

The only horse arriving off the back of a victory, FIGHTING TEMERAIRE can back that up in the second race on the card.

Trainer Dean Ivory has won with three of his last ten runners, one of which was this boy when he scored at 40/1 at Nottingham. His two other winners have been 17/2 and 7/1, so he is clearly prepping his runners in superb form. He is already only three winners shy of his total in the whole of 2021.

Though that success came at such a big price, it also coincided with a steep drop back in trip to 6f. He had not raced over that trip since January 2020, but coped superbly to win well.

A rise of 3lb seems likely to underestimate him and it is good that he remains over this distance. None of his rivals look like conditions, or their marks, particularly suit and back-to-back successes are on the horizon.

Newbury Racecourse

A top-class Flat and National Hunt track, Newbury’s left-handed, galloping course provides a true test of stamina, particularly in wet conditions. The highlights of their National Hunt season include the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup run at the end of November and the Betfair Hurdle, one of Europe’s richest handicap Hurdles, which takes place in February and is increasingly a springboard for live Supreme Novice Hurdle and Champion Hurdle candidates for the Cheltenham Festival the following month. On the Flat, the jewel in their crown is the Group 1 Qipco Lockinge Stakes in May. Newbury can also boast first-class facilities and a superb view of the whole track.

BASS PLAYER – (2:51 Newmarket)

George Boughey may have recruited a good one from Andrew Balding in Koy Koy, who ran well enough at Royal Ascot when tenth in the Britannia Stakes. After only five starts, he could well remain progressive.

That may also be the case with Austrian Theory, who bounced back from three successive last-placed efforts with a battling win at Hamilton. However, you would probably be dubious about how well-treated he was now and he has two very talented opponents.

The other is BASS PLAYER who has run in two Listed races for Tom Clover recently. They came on just his second and third career starts and he has equipped himself very well in both.

He was third at Epsom when seemingly not in love with the track. His inexperience likely played a part too, but though he was only fifth of six next time at this venue, he probably challenged on the wrong part of the course.

However, he was more or less level with three of his rivals, all rated significantly higher and another performance of that calibre would see him competitive off a mark of 102 on his handicap debut.

VIOLA – (3:22 Newmarket)

The pair of three-year-olds, Eternal Pearl and Mukaddamah, dominate the market, but that is a bit of a surprise.

The former has steadily improved and has a Listed runner-up finish to her name already at Goodwood. She then belatedly got off the mark at the fourth attempt after fluffing her lines at Newbury. That run, in particular is concerning.

Mukaddaah’s form figures have gone neatly backwards: 1234. Her fourth was in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, which is solid, but not spectacular. Instead, the older VIOLA may make it a double for James Fanshawe and Daniel Muscutt.

In the colours of the Elite Racing Club, she was second on her reappearance in a Group 3 at Haydock, when not getting that much luck in running. She finished off powerfully though, being beaten only by Sea La Rosa, who herself was runner-up to the extremely talented Free Wind next time out.

That is solid form all round and was an improvement on anything the five-year-old had shown before. There could be even more to come now with a run under her belt.

Bet of the day

CHARGING THUNDER – (3:57 Newmarket)

First and second at Ayr earlier this month, CHARGING THUNDER and Throne Hall remain the top two choices in that order.

David O’Meara’s four-year-old kicked away to win well in that race, in so doing claiming his second win of the season. His other win had come at Pontefract in June, while there were excuses in between for finishing only fifth at York. That run came just four days after his other victory in Yorkshire.

He is up another 4lb, but he has largely been progressive all season. Though that York disappointment was over 1m6f, he has previously won over the trip and he left a strong visual impression that this distance could be even better.

Throne Hall will remain a danger with a 4lb swing in his favour, but that may not be enough for the places to be reversed.

Brampton Manor Handicap

ROYAL PARADE – (4:31 Newmarket)

This should be fairly straightforward for ROYAL PARADE, who should need only repeat his debut performance to win here.

John & Thady Gosden’s three-year-old was third in what looked a strong novice event at Doncaster over 7f in June. The runner-up that day was Thesis, who has since won the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot off a mark of 90.

That is a serious level of form and Royal Parade was less than a length behind him. If he was capable of that on his first start, he could well be able to produce even more on his second effort.

Sense of Power, another Godolphin runner for Charlie Appleby here, also ran a very promising race on his debut, but that was last season and he is likely to need this more than the Gosden horse.

Today’s Racecards

CABINET OF CLOWNS – (5:07 Newmarket)

Auditor looked to have benefitted from the step up to 7f last time out and William Buick is a positive booking as he looks to back that success up.

However, the unexposed CABINET OF CLOWNS is taken to prove too good. A mark of 79 likely underestimates the depths of his abilities, as he has progressed through the majority of his starts.

His first two efforts resulted in defeats of under three lengths at Salisbury and Lingfield, but a return to that former track saw him win likeably in a novice event to get off the mark. That entitled him to a handicap debut at Sandown, in which he was runner-up to the talented Golden Voice.

That he could not match the winner that day is not to his detriment and he is only up 1lb. With plenty of improvement still to come from him, he can win this from the bottom of the handicap.
