Freddie Wilson Queensferry Stakes (6f, 2:55pm Sunday)

Bielsa (Kevin Ryan, Kevin Stott)

Career best effort came under an enterprising ride when triumphing in the Ayr Gold Cup last September off a mark of 98. However, has struggled to rediscover that level of form in six subsequent outings and was comfortably held when last seen in Group 3 company behind William Haggas’ Sense Of Duty at Newcastle last month. Drops back into Listed company this weekend but has the widest draw of all and it’s difficult to see him playing a role in the finish.

Judicial (Julie Camacho, Callum Rodriguez) N/R

Ebro River (Hugo Palmer, Ben Curtis)

Very smart sprinter who enjoyed a tremendous juvenile campaign last season. Landed Listed honours at Sandown on his third racecourse start before rounding off the year with victory at Group 1 level in the Phoenix Stakes over at the Curragh. Expected to take high order once again this term but has since struggled from two to three, finishing down the field in all three starts so far this year. Connections reach for blinkers for the first time this weekend and a bounce back to form is not ruled out from a handy draw in stall 2.

Manaccan (John Ryan, William Buick) N/R

Ventura Diamond (Richard Fahey, Oisin Orr)

Failed to add to her three juvenile wins last season but did manage to run to some promising races in defeat, reaching the frame in Listed company at the start of last season before running an eye-catching race to finish third in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes at Royal Ascot behind King’s Lynn and Vadream. Returned for her four-year-old campaign at Haydock back in May but ran no sort of race, weakening well over a furlong out and ultimately trailing home in last place. Should strip fitter with that run under her belt and has the ideal draw in stall 1.

Wings Of War (Clive Cox, Tom Marquand) N/R

Tippy Toes (Mark Johnston, Jason Hart)

Smart filly who completed her hat-trick on the all-weather surface when making a winning return in the Listed Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes at Chelmsford back in April. Struggled to replicate that impressive performance on the turf in her three subsequent starts and her record away from synthetics now reads 0-7.

Hellomydarlin (George Boughey, Clifford Lee)

Was placed at Listed level at Ripon and Deauville during her two-year-old season last year for connections and has again performed well without getting her head in front in that company at three. Finished just three parts of a length behind the eventual winner at Ayr last month but shaped as if something was clearly amiss when finishing tailed off in a four-runner contest at Newmarket back in handicap company sixteen days ago. Has questions to answer following that recent flop and the win record now stands at 1-16.

Illustrating (Karl Burke, Kieren Shoemark)

Progressed well as a two-year-old last year and looked like a sprinter worth following when readily landing a valuable conditions event at Goodwood this time last season. Backed that effort up with a narrow defeat in third in Group 3 company at Longchamp and was far from disgraced behind Tenebrism in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket in September. Rounded her campaign off with another placed effort at Newmarket the following month but has since struggled in her two starts as a three-year-old this season, finishing down the field in Listed company at Bath and Sandown. Clearly has the ability to make her mark at this sort of level but her latest efforts have been far from convincing and she’s been drawn out wide in stall 9.

Princess Shabnam (Sean Woods, Nicola Currie)

Won two of her six starts for connections last year and has returned in tremendous form this term. Arguably unlucky when narrowly beaten over this course and distance back in May but soon regained the winning thread with a comfortable victory at Chelmsford off a mark of 90 on her penultimate outing. Returned to this track and trip earlier this month and was again unfortunate not to prevail off a 6lb higher mark, beaten just a neck at the line after making plenty of ground up from her wide draw. Steps back into Listed company for only the second time on Sunday afternoon, but is clearly in great nick at the moment and could have the ability to go close.

Freddie Wilson Queensferry Stakes Verdict

Princess Shabnam arrives here in the best form and has only been beaten narrowly on both of her visits to Chester in the past. Sean Woods’ filly steps back into Listed company on Sunday afternoon and will be expected to play a key role in the finish. Richard Fahey’s Ventura Diamond will enjoy the softer conditions here and often runs very well on his second start after a break so is well worth considering despite his lacklustre effort at Newcastle last time out. However, this Listed contest can go the way of EBRO RIVER, who would take plenty of beating here if anywhere near his best. Last season’s Phoenix Stakes winner has failed to fire in his three outings so far this season but the addition of first-time blinkers could spark a return to form for Hugo Palmer’s highly-talented sprinter, and this former soft ground winner really should be going close from stall 2.

  1. EBRO RIVER
  2. Ventura Diamond
  3. Princess Shabnam
