Race Of The Day – Salisbury Takes Centre Stage On Wednesday

Salisbury plays host to a six-race card on Wednesday afternoon featuring the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Upavon Fillies’ Stakes at 15:30. Last year’s contest went the way of the William Haggas trained Lilac Road but who will prevail in this year’s renewal? Find out who gets our verdict below, alongside an exclusive customer offer from bet365, which is offering £50 In Free Bets to new customers when you sign-up and bet £10.

British Stallion Studs EBF Upavon Fillies’ Stakes (1m 1f 201y, 15:30 pm Wednesday)

By Starlight (Henry Candy, Dane O’Neill)

Sea the Stars mare who recorded two handicap victories over twelve furlongs at Goodwood last season. Disappointed on her final start at four when trailing home in seventh in the Group 3 Princess Royal Stakes in September but returned this year with a creditable effort in that grade when finishing fourth behind Sea La Rosa in the Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock back in May. Has failed to build on that performance in her subsequent outings however, and comes into this with questions to answer following two heavy defeats in Listed company at Pontefract and York. 0-2 over this trip and probably best to look elsewhere.

Climate (John & Thady Gosden, Frankie Dettori)

Developed into a useful three-year-old filly for Jessica Harrington last year. Shed her maiden tag in cosy fashion over a mile at Navan last September before going on to run above market expectations in a pair of Group 3 contests towards the end of the season, including the Pride Stakes at Newmarket. Not beaten far in fourth on her seasonal return behind Dreamloper in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes back in May but seemingly failed to see out the trip when finishing seventh in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes that same month. Has since been transferred over to John & Thady Gosden and the combination of the drop in trip and drop in class should see her go close on her stable debut.

Rose Of Kildare (Mark Johnston, Cieren Fallon)

Make Believe mare who has proven to be a top performer for connections in recent seasons. Landed three Group 3’s earlier in her career at two and three and has shown that she retains plenty of her ability at the age of five when defying a mammoth absence to finish runner-up in a pair of Listed contests over twelve furlongs at Newmarket last month. Connections have recently confirmed that she is in foal to 2020 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko and will be hoping that she can bow out in style before retiring to the paddocks.

Gatecrasher Girl (William Knight, Hayley Turner)

Lightly-raced three-year-old who built on her juvenile outings when winning her first three starts in handicap company this season. Failed to land a serious blow in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot on her penultimate start but soon got back on track when finishing second behind an improving type at Ripon on her fist start over ten furlongs last month. Takes a big step up in class on Wednesday but is thoroughly unexposed over this trip and is not without a chance despite her lengthy odds.

Kind Gesture (Roger Varian, Andrea Atzeni)

Finished a clear second on her debut over a mile at Nottingham back in May but quickly confirmed that she was a useful filly in the making when thumping her eleven rivals by ten lengths in novice company at Windsor the following month. Pitched into Group 3 company on her latest outing in the Valiant Stakes but ultimately failed to make any sort of impact when finishing seventh. Step up in trip could unlock further improvement at this early stage of her career and she is certainly not one to underestimate.

Morning Poem (John & Thady Gosden, Rab Havlin)

Caught the eye when making a successful winning debut over a mile at Kempton last season but failed to follow up over that course and distance when sent off a short-priced favourite on her seasonal return in April. Raced keenly when trailing home last in the Cheshire Oaks the following month but quickly returned to winning ways back down in trip, comfortably landing a competitive handicap at Newmarket over 1m2f off a mark of 80. Wasn’t disgraced from an 8lb higher mark when finishing second over that course and distance last time out but now returns to Listed company for only the second time and could again find one or two too good.

Rousay (Richard Hannon, Hollie Doyle)

Has yet to add to her sole career victory which came at Chelmsford last season but has run with plenty of credit in each of her five starts this term. Finished runner-up over this course and distance last month and confirmed that promise when filling the same position behind State Occasion at the Qatar Goodwood Festival under Hollie Doyle last time out. Hard to knock her constancy but now steps into the unknown as she takes on Listed opposition for the very first time.

Upavon Fillies’ Stakes Verdict

With recent form at Group 2 level, many punters will expect Climate to make a winning start for John & Thady Gosden back down in Listed company. The former Jessica Harrington trained filly certainly has the ability to go close in this grade, however, her career strike rate of 1-10 is slightly off-putting at such short odds and the vote instead goes to fellow market principal ROSE OF KILDARE. The three-time Group 3 winner should appreciate the return to this sort of trip following two recent narrow defeats over 1m4f at Newmarket and connections will be confident that the five-year-old mother-to-be can get her head back in front and end her career on a high. It’s still early days for Kind Gesture and Roger Varian’s lightly-raced filly can follow the market rivals home.
