Royal Ascot 2021 begins tomorrow, and in anticipation of a fine week's racing top tipster Andrew Mount has identified five favourites to avoid at the meeting. Check out his thoughts below, which come alongside an exclusive SBK offer, which provides new customers with a risk-free £20 bet.
BATTAASH – King’s Stand Stakes (Tuesday)
BATTAASH made all when odds-on for this race 12 months ago but was beaten in the two previous renewals and the return of crowds could see him play up before the race, as he has done previously. He’s no spring chicken at the age of seven and makes little appeal at odds of around 15-8.
POETIC FLARE – St James’s Palace Stakes (Tuesday)
2000 Guineas winner POETIC FLARE was only just touched off in the Irish equivalent on his latest outing but that was his fourth start in a six-week spell and such a busy start to the season could take its toll here. He’s also shaped as though the step up to 1m2f would suit and, while no great surprise were he to win, offers of around 7-2 make little appeal in such an open and competitive renewal.
SOLID STONE – Wolferton Stakes (Tuesday)
At the time of writing SOLID STONE was disputing favouritism at around the 11-2 mark for this 1m2f Listed race but with 18 declared at the five-day stage, he’s unlikely to encounter the small field that suits. His record in fields of eight or fewer runners reads 1122111 (5-7), compared to figures of 4290303235 (0-10) in larger line-ups. He finished second of 18 here last October but that was on the straight course when they split into two groups.
LORD NORTH – Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Wednesday)
Offers of around 7-4 look very skinny about LORD NORTH, especially with the ground on the fast side of good. The suspicion remains that he’s best with more juice in the ground and he’s 0-3 on officially good to firm or faster going.
BROOME – Hardwicke Stakes (Saturday)
BROOME is currently trading as the 7-2 favourite for this 1m4f Group 2 but Aidan O’Brien’s five-year-old has still to fully convince that he’s as good over this trip as he is at 1m2f. His record over trips of about 1m2f reads 111112 (5-6), with the defeat by a short head, as compared to figures of 4640 (0-4) over longer distances. He’s 0-4 on good to firm ground and was beaten by over more than 60 lengths on his sole course outing, albeit over 2m.
