Trainer – Richard Hughes

Candle Of Hope (13:45 Thirsk, British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes)

Trainer Richard Hughes is set to have his first runner at Thirsk on Friday afternoon as CANDLE OF HOPE makes the 460-mile-round trip up north from his Upper Lambourn base. Owned by The Queen, the Cable Bay filly attracted late market support before making her debut at Newbury in novice company just fifteen days ago.

Tracking the leaders throughout the six-furlong contest, Richard Hughes’ newcomer quickened up smartly in the hands of jockey David Egan entering the final furlong and soon put daylight between herself and her nearest pursuers, stretching clear on the run to the line to win by a comfortable 2¼ lengths. A half-sister to 1m2f-1m4f winner Encourage, Candle Of Hope should have little trouble in handling the extra furlong on Friday afternoon and while she has to concede 3lb to her ten rivals, the daughter of Cable Bay appears to be an exciting prospect for connections and will be expected to maintain her unbeaten start.

Trainer – Gemma Tutty

Mostly Cloudy (15:05 Ascot, John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap)

Another trainer setting off on a long trip on Friday afternoon is Gemma Tutty. The North Yorkshire handler took over the license from her mother Karen earlier in the year and has already enjoyed plenty of success on the track, sending out eleven winners so far this term. Of those eleven victories, four have come from the progressive three-year-old MOSTLY CLOUDY, who now seeks a five-timer for connections and makes the 490-mile-round trip down to Ascot on Friday afternoon.

The son of Harzand has been a real flagbearer for the yard in recent months, starting his winning sequence off a mark of 60 at Redcar in May before climbing the ranks with impressive back-to-back victories at Sandown and Nottingham to complete the hat-trick in June. Stepped up to an extended two miles on his most recent start off a mark of 80, the progressive colt displayed a willing attitude to rack up the four-timer at Doncaster. Held up towards the rear of the six-runner field on that occasion, Mostly Cloudy made smooth headway to challenge for the lead entering the final couple of furlongs and whilst he ultimately came home in front by just a head at the line, he was perhaps value for more than the official winning margin suggested.

Now rated 86, Mostly Cloudy now finds himself 26lb higher than for his first victory and although he now faces Class 3 opposition for the very first time, Gemma Tutty’s improving colt is difficult to ignore in search of his fifth successive victory, especially with connections enlisting the services of Tom Marquand for Friday’s assignment.

Trainer – Micky Hammond

Carnival Zain (16:15 Ascot, AllInTheRace Ascot Lady Amateur Riders’ Handicap)

Micky Hammond makes the 500-mile-round trip down south to Ascot on Friday with just the sole runner in CARNIVAL ZAIN. The Middleham-based trainer has only sent nine runners down to the Berkshire venue in the past, and despite failing to make it into the winner’s enclosure on any of those previous outings, the trainer will be confident of getting off the mark at Ascot on Friday afternoon.  Formerly trained in France, Carnival Zain has certainly taken time to come to hand for current connections. In fact, the Youmzain gelding offered little encouragement in his opening outings on track last season, finishing down the field in all of his six starts in handicap company.

However, returning from a 128-day break in March this year, Micky Hammond’s charge appeared revitalised and ran his best race for some time, staying on strongly over seven furlongs to finish a neck second at Newcastle off a mark of 64. Following his sudden return to form, Carnival Zain soon went on to land handicap contests at Catterick and Thirsk the following month and although the five-year-old was unable to justify strong market support at Pontefract on his next two starts, he was far from disgraced when finishing second and fourth and soon regained the winning thread with a comfortable success at Chester earlier this month off 74.

Although up 4lb to a career-high mark of 78 on Friday, there should still be plenty of improvement to come from Carnival Zain off the back of his smooth success on the Roodee last time out and the five-year-old is difficult to dismiss in search of his fourth victory of the campaign.

Trainer – Ann Duffield

Billyb (20:40 Newmarket, Donate To Racing Welfare Online Handicap

North Yorkshire trainer Ann Duffield is also set to have her first runner at Newmarket on Friday evening as she sends recent Doncaster scorer BILLYB down south on the 400-mile-round trip.

A surprise winner over a mile at Haydock off a mark of 70 in May, the Raven’s Pass gelding failed to follow up his opening success at the Merseyside venue when finishing down the field at Pontefract on his next outing in June. Switched to the all-weather surface at Newcastle on his penultimate start, Ann Duffield’s three-year-old soon got back on track and was certainly unlucky not to register his second career victory, finishing comfortably ahead of a subsequent winner but ultimately going down by a nose at the line to Richard Fahey’s runner Amaysmont.

Dropped down to seven furlongs on his most recent start at Doncaster off 77, Billyb produced his best performance of the season so far. Held up towards the rear of the field on that occasion, Ann Duffield’s charge made smooth headway to challenge for the lead entering the final furlong and was merely pushed out under hands and heels to readily score by 1¼ Lengths. Given the decisive manner in which Billyb put the race to bed at Town Moor earlier this month, a subsequent 6lb rise could still leave him feasibly treated off a mark of 83 and if getting a decent pace to aim at on Friday evening, Ann Duffield’s progressive three-year-old should be able to record his third win of the season.
