Sky Bet York Stakes (1m2f, Group 2, 3:15pm Saturday)

Dubai Future (Adam Kirby, Saeed bin Suroor)

Talented performer who returned to winning ways in January with a wide-margin victory in Listed company over in Meydan. Returned to British soil with a distant fourth behind Bay Bridge in the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May but soon bounced back to winning ways, comfortably landing the Listed Wolfreton Stakes by three lengths under Danny Tudhope at Royal Ascot in June. Was impressive that day, but now returns to pattern company where he is yet to triumph in seven previous attempts.

Dubai Honour (William Haggas, Stevie Donohoe)

Highly progressive gelding who built upon his sole novice victory at Haydock as a juvenile a couple of years ago with a tremendous campaign at three last season. Ran a mighty race from a poor draw to finish fourth in the 2021 Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot but soon made amends, picking up a hat-trick of wins including back-to-back Group 2 victories over in France at Deauville and Longchamp. Narrowly denied behind French raider Sealiway on his first crack at Group 1 company in the Champion Stakes in October before running with plenty of credit in fourth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin. Seasonal return at Meydan this season can be forgiven and sets a very tall standard if back to anywhere near his best.

Sir Busker (William Knight, Ben Curtis)

Reliable and consistent type for connections but has failed to get his head in front in his last twenty starts on the track. Last success came as a four-year-old when triumphing in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot back in June 2020. Set a difficult task when coming up against superstar-miler Baaeed on his last two outings but now must prove himself over ten furlongs for the very first time and would be a surprise winner given his profile.

Claymore (Jane Chapple-Hyam, David Egan)

Unexposed still after just four starts but has quickly made it up into a useful and progressive colt for connections. Landed a seven-furlong Newmarket novice in impressive fashion last season and returned to that venue on reappearance with a smart effort behind subsequent Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail over a mile. Shaped as if something was badly amiss when trailing home last at Longchamp on his penultimate start, but appreciated the move up to ten furlongs when returning ways with a smart success in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. Has plenty still to prove against the likes of Dubai Honour, but is clearly an improving three-year-old and should be more to come.

Dark Moon Rising (Kevin Ryan, Kevin Stott)

Useful colt who made a winning return as a three-year-old when staying on well to land a conditions event over a mile at Chelmsford back in March. Came up short in Listed company at Newcastle the following month and appeared out of his depth when finishing down the field in the Group 2 Dante at York before shaping like a non-stayer in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot most recently. Return to ten furlongs should suit but would need a career-best effort to prevail and that looks extremely unlikely.

Sky Bet York Stakes Verdict

Claymore was impressive when winning the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes last time out, and although the son of New Bay should have more to offer at this trip, the three-year-old could be up against a useful type in William Haggas’ DUBAI HONOUR. The Pride Of Dubai gelding went from strength to strength last season, registering a pair of Group 2 victories in France before running with plenty of credit in Group 1 contests at Ascot and Sha Tin. Connections will be confident of landing a Group 1 victory with him at some stage this season and if stripping fitter following his comeback run at Meydan in March, William Haggas’ charge looks the one to beat with his sights now lowered back down in Group 2 company. Dubai Future turned the Listed Wolferton Stakes into a precession when last seen and is well worth his spot back in pattern company.

  1. DUBAI HONOUR
  2. Dubai Future
  3. Claymore
