Take a look at our Horse by Horse comments for the 2019 Investec Derby, including our verdict for the big race at Epsom Downs...
Experienced colt with more experience than most of these. Impressive in both his Trial wins at Leopardstown, will definitely stay, has a touch of class and has a big chance. Donnacha O'Brien gets the leg up.
Complete outsider of the field. Has an official rating of just 87 and has absolutely no chance in this company. Will give connections an exciting day out, though.
Useful sort, but most likely up to no more than Listed or Group 3 level. Top trainer and open to improvement, but is out of his depth on the face of things.
Left behind by Telecaster in the Dante Stakes, but he will be primed for the big day and must be respected now he’s stepping up in distance - a job he was bred for. Interesting.
Won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf as a 2yo and was well-fancied to land the Dante last time out, but he was quite disappointing. Hard to see him bouncing back to form in the heat of a Derby
Irish raider finished 4th behind Magna Grecia in the 2000 Guineas. Stamina is a major concern, but connections feel he will get the trip. Isn’t without each-way claims. Big opportunity for rider Chris Hayes.
Norway was left readily behind by Sir Dragonet at Chester last time out and needs a giant leap of improvement to be involved here. Jamie Spencer rides.
Hugely exciting and precious horse that has rather come out of nowhere following his Chester romp, to seemingly be the chief Ballydoyle hope here. Ryan Moore rides, but will he handle the occasion?
Another big priced outsider here. Left readily behind by Sovereign in the Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown and is another with a small mountain to climb.
Impressive winner of the Dante Stakes, a key trial for this historic race. Hugely progressive and massive form chance, but he has been handed a poor draw in stall two.
BIG RACE VERDICT:
Telecaster is the rising force on recent form, but his chances have dipped considerably now we know the draw. Stall 2 is a bit of a coffin box and Oisin Murphy will have his work cut out to land a blow. Sir Dragonet is clearly talented and exciting, but the race fell apart a bit at Chester, we don't know how he'll handle faster ground and this is a much, much stiffer examination of his abilities. With that in mind, BROOME could be the one to be on. This horse ticks all the boxes. He has proven stamina, proven class, a lovely way of galloping and when he hits top gear, he does everything oh so easily. Donnacha O'Brien is a top pilot and this son of Derby winner Australia has what it takes to win the 2019 Investec Derby.
Bangkok and stablemate Anthony Van Dyck may prove to be the chief dangers.
