ROCKET RODNEY – (1:50 Sandown, Coral Dragon Stakes) 11/8

Sandown’s Summer Festival kicks off with the Listed Coral Dragon Stakes, a race which has been won by the likes of The Last Lion, Havana Grey and Liberty Beach in recent years.

The potential star in this year’s lineup is ROCKET RODNEY, a son of Dandy Man who runs in the Victorious Racing silks.

George Scott’s charge was gelded prior to making his racecourse debut at Nottingham in April, when an admirable second having set a strong pace at the head of affairs. He went one place better (at Evs money) at Goodwood next time, and improved markedly on those showings when a close second in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Rocket Rodney likely bumped into one there in Little Big Bear, doing by far the best of the runners to have raced closer to the stands side. At least 6lb clear on ratings, a repeat of that Royal Ascot second would likely suffice here in what, on paper at least, doesn’t appear to be the strongest of races.

Tomorrow’s Racing

RODRIGO DIAZ – (2:20 Sandown, Coral Marathon) 11/4

Having started off life in handicaps off a mark of just 59, RODRIGO DIAZ produced form figures of 1112132 to climb 37lb in the ratings to a mark of 96. He has since transitioned into a pattern-level operator, and aims to gain his first win outside of handicap company when lining up in the Listed Coral Marathon at Sandown on Friday.

Bouncing back from a couple of down the field finishes in Dubai earlier this year, Rodrigo Diaz made a promising return to Britain when third in the Group 3 Henry II over this course and distance 36 days ago.

Rodrigo Diaz did best of the closers that day, and the first-time tongue-tie fitted is retained.

If getting a decent pace to aim at dropped into Listed company, expect to see Rodrigo Diaz finishing better than most under jockey Jamie Spencer.

ADDEYBB – (4:05 Sandown, Davies Insurance Services Gala Stakes) 6/5

The star attraction on Sandown’s Friday card is undoubtedly the presence of ADDEYBB in the Listed Gala Stakes.

William Haggas’s globetrotter has been seen only twice since finishing second in the Coral-Eclipse at this meeting 12 months ago, struggling in the Qipco Champion Stakes before a reappearance third in the Brigadier Gerard over this track and trip in May.

Now an 8yo, Addeybb is entitled to come on for that showing, and being a four-time Group 1 winner he’s certainly got the class edge over these opponents. Whether he’s the force of old is now very much up for debate, and he’d not want conditions to dry up too much more, but with upwards of 9lb in hand on these terms he remains very much the one to beat.
