image-left-align big-race-previewGroup 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at 3.30pm, where four top class talents take up the bulk of the market. It has been 5 years since the mighty Frankel won this famous race and one of these nine will add their name to the illustrious list. So, which one will it be?

Ribchester is just about holding sway at the top of the market at a top price of 2/1 for Richard Fahey. This lengthy and impressive son of Iffraaj has only had 10 career starts, but in that time has accumulated a wealth of top class form and he could be even better as a 4yo, he won the Group 2 Mill Reef here as a 2yo so has course form to boot, along with a run already this season -- so Ribchester is the horse to beat.

Aidan O'Brien’s chief representative is the filly Somehow, an in-form and classy customer who could be anything, but this is a huge step up in company taking on the best colts around at a mile. Lightning Spear is a hugely talented 6yo who will appreciate any cut in the ground and has to be respected, but you’d have to be worried that he could be vulnerable against improving 4yos.

If there is to be a minor upset here, it could come by way of Aclaim who racked up some impressive wins at the back end of last season. The fact that he turns up here first time out is a testament to the faith Martyn Meade has in this horse; but will he stay 1m on good to soft at Newbury well enough to beat this field? Major concern.

So, we are left with the 2016 Qipco 2000 Guineas & St James’s Palace Stakes winner GALILEO GOLD, who runs for the race sponsors and Hugo Palmer and simply has to have a massive chance of winning under regular pilot Frankie Dettori. This son of Paco Boy is the full package in that he stays, handles any ground and has undoubted class at this level. With Frankie doing the steering and very bullish noises coming from the yard, Galileo Gold could be the key to this puzzle at decent looking odds of 10/3.
