Only ten fillies will head to the 1m start for the 2025 Betfred 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday 4th May, but there are some hugely exciting three-year-olds set to do battle in the second Classic of the season. A monumental battle is ahead of us with Godolphin’s red-hot favourite Desert Flower clashing with unbeaten Ballydoyle filly Lake Victoria in a real ding-dong encounter. Our tipster Steve Chambers previews that clash and also picks out any other runners that could play a notable role.

Desert Flower v Lake Victoria
Desert Flower
Four wins from four, Desert Flower was one of the star two-year-olds of last season as having won the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster on her penultimate start she then obliterated her rivals by over five lengths to claim glory in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Immediately propelled to clear favourite for the 1000 Guineas, Charlie Appleby’s superstar has already shown she can deliver the goods at Flat HQ (3 of her 4 wins have come at Newmarket), and if she’s trained on then she has to be the one to beat.
Lake Victoria
However, Aidan O’Brien’s Lake Victoria possesses even more impressive stats having won all five of her starts and having won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket she then went and won at the Breeders’ Cup in America. Having won the Cheveley Park by three lengths, the daughter of Frankel showed she is also a class act at the track and she will look to hand O’Brien an eighth win in the race.
How Will The Clash Go?
Both have proven to be top notch fillies during their juvenile campaign and both are entitled to be well fancied for this event, but Lake Victoria showed when winning at the Breeders’ Cup that a mile is certainly not beyond her stamina reserves and she could potentially have a little too much speed for Desert Flower, who may just take a little longer to get up to high speed. Sure to be battling it out at the finish, if Ryan Moore can get a length or two ahead on board Lake Victoria then she could just last home and down the staying on Desert Flower.

Other Contenders
Nearly two lengths behind Lake Victoria in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last season, Red Letter has well and truly slipped under the radar for Ger Lyons, but she’s third in the betting, at the time of writing and is entitled to take her chance. She was keeping on all the way to line in that 7f contest, so is one that will relish the step up to a mile here and she could be the main protagonist for upsetting the fancied pair at the head of the betting.
Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle bid for a first 1000 Guineas victory and the pair team up with Duty First, who ended last season finishing second in the Rockfel Stakes and seen last month claiming a shock 33/1 win in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury. The benefit of a run is sure to aid her chances and she was a stunning winner that day, but this is a whole new level. Ralph Beckett’s Chantilly Lace only has one run and one win on her CV, but she was impressive on debut at Salisbury and could be smart, while the likes of Elwateen and Flight add depth to a contest that could be dominated by those at the forefront of the betting.

2025 1000 Guineas Prediction
It’s all about the monumental clash between Desert Flower and LAKE VICTORIA and it’s the latter that can claim Classic glory on Sunday afternoon. With the potential to try and kick clear of her market rival, Aidan O’Brien’s star filly could just get first run on Godolphin’s Desert Flower, who will have to settle for second place, while Red Letter can claim the bronze medal.
