An exhilarating renewal of the 2025 Grand National will take place at 4pm on Saturday 5th April, as 34 runners go to post for the world’s greatest steeplechase at Aintree. There’s a spectacular undercard as well at the Merseyside venue and our in-house tipster Steve Chambers not only gives us his best bet in the National, but also his premier selections elsewhere on the card.

2:30pm Aintree – William Hill Handicap Chase
Lucinda Russell’s Myretown was a runaway winner of the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and it would be no surprise to see him follow up again here in the 2:30pm. However, he’s been given a mammoth 15lbs hike for that victory, so he could be worth taking on with a more attractively handicapped rival in this event.
The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained WEVEALLBEENCAUGHT was another seen running a cracker at the Cheltenham Festival when coming fourth in the Kim Muir Handicap Chase and the Naunton inmate could go close here. He contested Grade 1 races as novice hurdler, but has improved for the switch to fences and he could really relish this 3m test on going he should excel on.

3:05pm Aintree – Ivy Liverpool Hurdle
Olly Murphy’s Strong Leader claimed victory in this race last season and having bypassed the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham for another crack at this contest then he has to be well respected. However, it’s a golden opportunity for TEAHUPOO to bounce back from his Cheltenham disappointment and add another Grade 1 prize to his glittering CV.
Gordon Elliott’s raider was pipped by Henry De Bromhead’s Bob Olinger at Cheltenham last month, as he looked to maintain his status as the premier staying hurdler on UK & Irish shores, but with his fellow Irish raider not lining up here then he can outclass his rivals on Saturday. It’s his first visit to Aintree this weekend and while the ground maybe quicker than ideal he should still have enough class to get the better of this field that lacks strength in depth.
2025 Grand National Preview – Matty Sutcliffe Runs Through the Key Runners in The People’s Race
The Randox Grand National is more than a race. Not only does it stop the nation, but it brings family’s, friends and colleagues together, all united in their desire to land a winner in ‘the big one’. Bragging rights, euphoria, heartbreak, elation, jubilation, despair, the endless whirlpool of household emotions are reflected in that of…
Thu 03 Apr 20254:00pm Aintree – Randox Grand National Handicap Chase
One of the most competitive renewals of the Grand National in recent times, there will be a multitude of runners heading to the start with a genuine chance of claiming Aintree glory. Gavin Cromwell’s Stumptown was a fine winner of the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham last month and looks tailor-made for this test, while Iroko is an attractively handicapped British raider, who has to be put on the shortlist.
However, the one that makes most appeal is I AM MAXIMUS, who can follow in the footsteps of the likes of Red Rum and most recently Tiger Roll by winning back-to-back Grand Nationals. A runaway seven-and-a-quarter length winner of the race 12 months ago, the Willie Mullins-trained star will have the burden of top weight in this year’s race, but the manner in which he dispatched his rivals in 2024 suggested he could be more than capable of defying an 8lbs higher mark here.
Last seen finishing down the field in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in February, the Closutton inmate has been left fresh for this contest and if Paul Townend can switch him off just off the pace through the first lap then he could well creep into contention like he did last year. With the ground unlikely to be energy-sapping, I Am Maximus could let again unleash a race-winning turn of foot after the last and bound to more success in the race.

4:40pm Aintree – Rosconn Group Maghull Novices’ Chase
Dan Skelton’s L’EAU DU SUD was fancied by many to lower the colours of Majborough in the Arkle, but could only finish fourth in that Grade 1 2m contest at the Cheltenham Festival. Beaten by that raider along with the eventual winner Jango Baie, Skelton’s charge headed into the event with four wins out of four over fences, but disappointed in that big race.
Now, making a swift return to the track, he could be more than capable of returning to winning ways as he faces an inferior field in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at 4:40pm. Only By Night and Kalif Du Berlais are both smart novice chasers, but neither have shown what L’Eau Du Sud has on the track yet and Skelton’s galloping grey can cruise to victory in the penultimate race of the day.
