Top tipster Andrew Mount struck with 8-1 shot Whenthedealinsdone - his only Glorious Goodwood bet on Thursday – and has four bets at the Sussex venue on Friday as well as a confident each-way pick at Bangor. Check out his selections below, along with an excellent £20 Welcome Offer at Tote.
JUST HUBERT – (1.50 Goodwood, 1pt win - 11/1)
Last year’s winner JUST HUBERT bombed out when I backed him at Newbury 13 days ago but, with the benefit of hindsight, that flat left-handed track simply doesn’t suit. H
e did win left-handed at Pontefract back in 2018 but that was in a weak novice contest and his four handicap wins have all come on right-handed tracks. His record in July reads 311719 (3-6), improving to 111 (3-3) away from Newbury.
QAADER – (3.00 Goodwood, 1pt each-way - 14/1)
QAADER resented being taken on for the lead (or perhaps wasn’t suited by the straight track) when only fourth at Newmarket on his penultimate start and he bounced back to win under patient tactics over 1m2f here yesterday.
The likely strong pace could compensate for the drop back to a mile, he’s well drawn in stall 7 and Mark Johnston has done with the horses he’s run twice at this meeting. His record on turning tracks now reads 211 (2-3), with the defeat by just half a length at 16-1
LIBERTY BEACH – (3.35 Goodwood - 0.5pts each-way -12/1)
The Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot was run at a very strong gallop, setting the race up for the finishers. Six of the first eight came form well off the pace and the two that didn’t – fourth-placed Battaash and sixth-placed LIBERTY BEACH – can have their efforts upgraded.
The John Quinn-trained filly looks the value call and she likes this track, having won the Molecomb in 2019 and finished fourth to Battaash in this race last year.
ARECIBO – 3.35 Goodwood, 1pt each-way - 14/1)
ARECIBO (stall 12), my pick in the King’s Stand when a 28-1 runner-up, has to be the main play again, as the race could be run to suit. He’s drawn near the likely pace angles in Ornate (stall 10) and Good Effort (stall 9) and luck in running can see him arrive on the scene late under Jamie Spencer.
TWO BLONDES – (3.55 Bangor, 1.5pts each-way - 6/1)
The inside of the hurdles track looked badly cut up at Cartmel last Monday and all the races were won by those who steered well clear of the rail. Dual Flat winner TWO BLONDES was bidding to break his jumps duck at the 12th attempt in the 2m1f Handicap Hurdle and was sent off at 13-2 on the back of his narrow second at Uttoxeter three weeks earlier.
Brian Hughes never left the 'swamp' on the inside rail yet the five-year-old travelled strongly throughout and looked the likeliest winner on turning in. He was briefly short of room, giving a bump to eventual winner Pateen and had to settle for a one and-a-half length third of 13. Plenty of other fancied horses who took the inside route in the hurdle races at this meeting finished well beaten and it was an especially noteworthy performance.
Trainer Donald McCain has a fantastic record with his handicap hurdlers at today’s venue – 45 winners from 224 runners since the start of 2011 (20.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £91.83 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who’d had a recent outing (within 28 days) were 33 from 104 in the same period (31.7%) for a profit of £123.57. Two Blondes looks a solid each-way bet.
