Top tipster Andrew Mount has been in good form this week and he has six selections for Friday's racing
INVITATIONAL & UNDER THE STARS -1.45 Goodwood
One Master looks a weak favourite in the Group 3 Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes and I’m happy to take her on. I’m a big fan of the William Haggas-trained six-year-old but she peaks in the autumn, with her last-time-out Newmarket fourth taking her form figures before August 30th to 3434432564 (0-10). After that date her record in Europe reads 111112 (5-6) with the sole defeat by another autumn expert Donjuan Triumphant.
I’m backing two against her and the first one is INVITATIONAL, who had little chance after making the running over a mile at Ascot last time. She faded into a 66-1 eighth of ten that day, taking her record at the one-mile trip to 068 (0-3). Over shorter distances her record since her racecourse debut stands at 117211 (4-6), with the unplaced effort easily excused as she was always playing catch-up at Chelmsford after getting hampered at the start.
UNDER THE STARS is also worth backing each-way against the favourite. Her finished last of six at Newmarket behind Nazeef last time but that was in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and her patient running style was at a disadvantage. She was till beaten by less than five lengths and ger record below Group 2 level reads 1111 (4-4).
SUDONA – 2.25 Pontefract
The steady pace did for SUDONA at Ripon last time where she could only finish fourth of the seven runners. She needs a strong pace to chase and it’s no coincidence that her two previous wins came in fields of 15 and 13 runners. She faces only five rivals in this 1m2f handicap but the presence of out-and-out pacesetter Michele Strogoff should ensure a sound gallop and she’s worth chancing. Michele Strogoff was also in the line-up when she scored over trip and track on her penultimate start and she can hopefully track that one in second or third place before pouncing late.
VALE OF KENT & CARDSHARP – 2.45 Goodwood
For a big-field contest there’s not a huge amount of pace in the Unibet Golden Mile Handicap and this looks an ideal opportunity for Mark Johnston’s VALE OF KENT to make all. He’s well drawn in stall 3 of 15 and ran much better than his 15th place suggested at Ascot last time. Poorly drawn in stall 2 that day, he used up plenty of energy to get across and lead on the favoured rail and he’s always gone well at Goodwood in the past, recording form figures of 3rd of 16 (beaten by half a length), 2nd of 18 (beaten by a neck), 1st, 4th of 17 (beaten by two lengths) and 2nd of 20 (beaten by one length from a poor draw in stall 17 in this race last year).
Stablemate CARDSHARP was only 13th when I recommended him for the Bunbury Cup on his penultimate start but bounce back with a 28-1 third of 19 in the International Stakes at Ascot last week. He was well drawn in stall 20 (first five drawn 19, 18, 20, 12 and 17) but he was the only horse in the first nine who raced up with the pace. He placed in Group company in his two previous course runs and is worth a saver despite the stamina doubt.
FOLLOW INTELLO – 7.35 Wolverhampton
Progeny of Intello have a good record on Wolverhampton’s Tapets surface, winning 13 of their 60 starts (21.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £60.11 to a £1 level stake at SP. Follow Intello fits the bill and, like most from the Chris Wall yard, he was beaten on his comeback – finished 11th of 14 when a 22-1 shot at Kempton. He won second-time out last year and he ran well on his sole course outing, keeping on into a 66-1 fourth of 12 in maiden company over an inadequate trip.
