Andrew Mount fired in 16/1 winner Highly Sprung at Newmarket on Thursday and is back in action with four horse racing tips at Newmarket on Friday
The stalls are far side at Newmarket today and it might help to be drawn against the far side rail, favouring low numbers. There’s not a huge amount of early pace on show in the 6f Betway Handicap but DAZZLING DAN (stall 2 of 12) usually races prominently and he’s always gone well at Newmarket, finishing runner-up at 33-1 in a July Course novice on his second career start, winning here on the Rowley Mile in a 14-runner handicap last spring and finishing third of 20 at the July meeting. HIs full 6f record reads 4221216314 (3-10) and he ran a blinder on his comeback last season, running second by a head at Doncaster against a pace bias. Pam Sly does well with her handicappers coming back from a break of 150 days or longer, scoring with 19 of the 128 qualifiers (14.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £142.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. At the time of writing, three of the first four in William Hill’s betting had the three highest draws, making him an even more enticing bet.
OXTED (stall 1 of 7) looks well drawn against the fence in the Group 3 Betway Abernant Stakes (2.25) and could prove hard to beat. He was very progressive last season, scoring first-time out at Salisbury and signing off with a win from 21 rivals in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster. His record on good or faster going now reads 1221 (2-4) and he should get a good tow into the race from Green Power, Breathtaking Look and Emeraaty Ana.
GUNMETAL prefers a sound surface and can be forgiven two modest efforts at the end of last season, which saw his handicap mark generously dropped by 4lb to 94. His latest win came in a field of 20 runners at Ripon but they split into two groups that day and he actually raced with just nine rivals, making all up the stands’ side. He has plenty of Newmarket form, with combined figures on both the Newmarket courses of 1040013175 (3-10), improving to 314115 (3-6) in fields of 12 or fewer runners. He could be hard to catch if allowed to dominate.
CITRON MAJOR is another who prefers small fields and he has a handicap record, below Class2 level and in fields of 11 or fewer runners, of 11517711 (5-9) for a profit of £37.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Fast ground suits and he looks well drawn towards the far side pace in stall 4. He has been slowly away on a couple of occasions but is 1lb lower than when scoring at Windsor last summer and he’s undergone wind surgery over the winter.
