British racing is back! GG’s top tipster Andrew Mount has three picks for Newcastle’s comeback card on the first day of what should be a cracking week of racing.
DEFENCE TREATY (1.35 Newcastle)
DEFENCE TREATY (stall 3 of 12) was added to my tracker after his fifth place in a 7f handicap here in July, where he did second best of those to come from off the pace in a slowly-run contest. He ran another eyecatching race against a pace at Redcar next time, doing best of those drawn high in fourth place (first four drawn 2, 3, 1 and 8 of 10).
Since fitted with cheekpieces his record in fields of 12 or more runners stands at 1103 (2-4), with the unplaced effort excusable as he was struck into. He’s drawn slightly lower than ideal in the 1m handicap (1.35) but he tends to be ridden patiently and should be able to get cover down the centre of the track.
TENAX (3.20 Newcastle)
The 6f handicap (3.20) is the race I’m most looking forward to on Monday as the front two in the betting both have chinks in their armour. Current 4-1 favourite Heath Charnock has proved frustrating since landing two of his first three career starts and February’s 5f course defeat was his ninth straight reverse.
He started as favourite for five of his last six races and, while I can see him placing – his handicap record reads 24234523 (0-8) - he just doesn’t look one to rely on. The case against current 9-2 second favourite Tathmeen is perhaps not as strong but this course expert seems happiest in small fields, with five of his seven wins coming in fields of eight or fewer runners.
He has won in a field of 14 at today’s venue but they split into three groups that day and he never encountered the traffic problems that can sometimes occur in big fields. Also, the lack of a run since early March could find him out. I’m going to oppose the pair with Nigel Tinker's Tenax (stall 5 of 12), nicely drawn in the middle. The consistent four-year-old probably should have won more than two of his 17 career starts but hasn’t always found as much for pressure as looked likely.
However, he’s undergone wind surgery since his latest start and is bred to appreciate the switch to Newcastle’s Tapeta for the first time. Slade Power offspring have won five of their 18 course starts over 6f-1m (28% strike-rate) for a profit of £24.50 to a £1 level stake at SP and it’s interesting to see Rowan Scott take the ride for the first time.
TASTE THE NECTAR (3.55 Newcastle)
TASTE THE NECTAR (stall 3 of 12) is drawn near the early pace (likley to come from stalls 4, 5 and 6) in the 6f Betway Casino Handicap (3.55) and should get a good tow into the race. She’s capable of running well when fresh and her all-weather record in fields of 10 or more runners stands at 112 (2-3), with the defeat by a short head when hanging left into the deeper ground on the inside rail at Wolverhampton.
